    • Melts down against Giants
Garrett (5-2) took the loss Friday against the Giants, coughing up five runs on four hits and a walk in the eighth inning.

Advice: The big blow was a grand slam by Patrick Bailey as Garrett squandered a 6-2 lead. The 31-year-old right-hander has been tagged with the loss in each of his last two appearances, and he's given up seven of his eight earned runs on the season in his last six innings, a poor stretch that has come as he's moved into the late-inning mix due to Edwin Diaz's own poor form. Garrett's stumbles have added more than two points to his ERA, but he still sports a 2.67 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 43:13 K:BB through 27 frames. Rotowire.com Saturday, 7:38 am

    • Picks up ninth save
Doval gave up a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one in the ninth inning Friday to record his ninth save of the season in an 8-7 win over the Mets.

Advice: The Giants scored six of their runs in the eighth and ninth innings to create the save chance, but Doval very nearly squandered it following a leadoff double by pinch hitter DJ Stewart and a fielding error by Marco Luciano. It was the first earned run the right-hander has allowed since May 8 at Coors Field, and on the season Doval carries a 3.05 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 27:15 K:BB through 20.2 innings while converting nine of 10 save opportunities. • Camilo Doval hangs on for ninth save
Camilo Doval worked around two hits and an error to earn the save on Friday over the Mets. He struck out one.

Advice: This was a treacherous ninth inning for Doval. The Mets rallied on him and then Marco Luciano butchered a tailor-made double play that would’ve ended the game. Then he intentionally walked Brandon Nimmo before punching out J.D. Martinez with a runner on third and one out. Then Matt Chapman made a herculean bare-handed play to end the game. He remains a super steady closing option despite this near collapse. Rotoworld Friday, 7:28 pm

    • Stuck with first loss
Garrett (5-1) took the loss Wednesday against Cleveland, allowing a run on two hits and a walk in one inning. He struck out two.

Advice: After entering with the game tied 3-3 in the seventh inning, Garrett allowed a leadoff single to David Fry, who advanced to second on a wild pitch before eventually scoring on a Johnathan Rodriguez base hit. It's the first loss of the year for the 31-year-old Garrett -- he's allowed just two earned runs in his last 13.1 innings. Despite Wednesday's setback, Garrett's emerged as a top option in the Mets' bullpen and could see the occasional save chance with Edwin Diaz temporarily shifting to a lower-leverage role. Overall, Garrett sports a 1.04 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP while posting a stellar 14.9 K/9 across 26 innings. Rotowire.com Thursday, 7:35 am

    • Shut down for two weeks
Manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Alzolay (forearm) will be shut down from throwing for at least two weeks, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Alzolay went in for a second opinion on his right flexor strain Tuesday, and the damage appears to be serious enough to warrant a shutdown. Counsell added that Alzolay could require surgery, but his next steps will be determined after the two-week rest period. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 2:16 pm

    • Blows first save
Doval gave up two unearned runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning Tuesday to blow his first save of the season in a 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Pirates. He struck out one.

Advice: The Giants rolled into the ninth inning with a 6-2 lead, but after Luke Jackson put two runners aboard with one out, Doval got the call and coaxed a potential double-play grounder from Andrew McCutchen, only for Marco Luciano to boot it and pave the way for a Pirates rally. Doval's control has taken a step backward this season, as he has a 15.7 percent walk rate compared to a 9.3 percent mark in 2023, but he still carries a 2.89 ERA to go with his 1.45 WHIP, 25:13 K:BB through 18.2 innings and eight saves. • Heading for second opinion
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday that Alzolay (forearm) will receive a second opinion on his flexor strain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: The right-hander landed on the injured list with a flexor strain last week, and news of a second opinion isn't an encouraging development. Alzolay remains without a clear timeline for his return and should be considered out indefinitely as he continues to be evaluated. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 3:00 pm

    • Adbert Alzolay (forearm) heads for second opinion
Adbert Alzolay is getting a second opinion on his right forearm.

Advice: Not great. Alzolay hit the injured list earlier this month with a right forearm strain and the fact that he’s seeking multiple medical opinions seems to indicate that he could be facing an extended absence. There should be some clarity on his status later this week, but it’s looking unlikely that he’ll be back anytime soon. Rotoworld Tuesday, 2:38 pm

    • Lands six-out save
Garrett earned the save Sunday against Miami, allowing one hit and no walks with four strikeouts over two scoreless innings.

Advice: Garrett took the ball in the eighth with the Mets leading 4-3 and, after striking out the side and getting four runs of support, stayed out to complete the ninth. It's unclear if Garrett would still have gotten the save chance if New York didn't extend its lead, but he's still a candidate for saves moving forward with Edwin Diaz moving out of the closer role temporarily to get back on track.
