• Sitting Friday
Smith is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Mariners.

Advice: Smith will begin Friday's series opener in the dugout after starting in the last two games, going 4-for-7. He's been one of the Rangers' hottest hitters in June, slashing .368/.429/.526 with seven runs, one home run and two RBI. Ezequiel Duran and Davis Wendzel will start at shortstop and third base, respectively, against Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo. Rotowire.com Friday, 4:06 pm

  • Return might come Monday
Turner (hamstring) could be activated from the 10-day injured list Sunday or Monday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Advice: While the Phillies have been vague about a timeline for Turner's return, Gelb notes that the shortstop ran again Friday, and while he'll maybe" return Sunday, it will "probably" happen Monday instead, as Philadelphia begins a six-game homestand. Turner has been shelved since early May with a left hamstring strain, and it's looking like he'll skip a rehab assignment. Rotowire.com Friday, 1:57 pm

  • Giants activate SS Nick Ahmed from 10-day IL
Giants activated SS Nick Ahmed from the 10-day injured list.

Advice: Ahmed had been on the injured list with a wrist injury since May 10th. He’s hitting .236 with no home runs in 110 at-bats with the Giants this year. Ahmed will share playing time with Brett Wisely at shortstop going forward. Rotoworld Friday, 10:51 am

  • Returns from injured list
The Giants reinstated Ahmed (wrist) from the 10-day injured list Friday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Areareports.

Advice: Ahmed has been sidelined just over a month by a sprained left wrist but is ready to rejoin the Giants after three rehab appearances in the minors. He was operating as San Francisco's primary shortstop prior to the injury, largely due to his reliable glove, and he has a .236/.274/.291 slash line through 36 games this season. • Moves up in batting order
Hamilton batted second and went 1-for-5 with a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 9-3 win over Philadelphia.

Advice: Hamilton's good stretch of hitting led to him batting second for the second consecutive game against a right-hander, and the shortstop extended his hit streak to five games. Since mid-May, when manager Alex Cora started giving him regular run in the starting lineup, Hamilton has slashed .341/.378/.553 with 11 extra-base hits, nine RBI, 14 runs and 10 steals over 26 contests. • Stays at shortstop
Smith started at shortstop and went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Dodgers.

Advice: Smith made another start at shortstop, as the Rangers are being careful with Corey Seager (hamstring). Seager had returned to action Wednesday, serving as the DH, and was originally in Thursday's starting lineup at DH before being scratched. Smith continued to be a surprising contributor for the Rangers; he's gone 19-for-53 (.358) with six extra-base hits, two steals, four RBI and 10 runs scored over the last 15 games. • Drives in two in loss
Cruz went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Cardinals.

Advice: The 25-year-old shortstop tied up the game with a two-run single off Lance Lynn in the fifth inning, but that finished the scoring for Pittsburgh. Cruz now has eight RBI over his last seven games, and his batting average in June is a solid .286. He will carry a .248/.300/.432 slash line with nine home runs and 28 RBI into a weekend series at Colorado. Rotowire.com Thursday, 4:01 pm

  • Trea Turner (hamstring) running at 100 percent
Trea Turner (hamstring) progressed to running at 100 percent on Thursday.

Advice: Turner is trending towards making his long-awaited return to Philadelphia’s lineup at some point early next week. It sounds like the 30-year-old shortstop will skip a minor-league rehab assignment, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him get in a couple at-bats over the weekend prior to returning. • Getting day off
Gonzales is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in St. Louis.

Advice: Gonzales looks to be getting a routine maintenance day after he had started in every game for the Pirates dating back to May 13. The second-year infielder recorded a double in both of the first two games of the series, giving him 12 extra-base hits through 119 plate appearances on the season. Jared Triolo will get the nod at second base Thursday while Gonzales rests. Rotowire.com Thursday, 8:36 am
