• Bound for Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Suwinski to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

Advice: The lefty-hitting Suwinski has mostly operated as a strong-side platoon outfielder this season, but even against right-handed pitching, he's struggled to a .144/.256/.261 slash line over 129 plate appearances. The Pirates will send Suwinski to Indianapolis with the hope that he refines his approach and regains some confidence at the plate, but a return to the big leagues likely won't be imminent until he starts producing at Triple-A. In the meantime, Suwinski's absence could reopen more playing time at first base for Rowdy Tellez while Connor Joe takes on more starts out of the corner outfield. Rotowire.com Today, 9:38 am

  • Jack Suwinski sent down the minor leagues
Pirates optioned OF Jack Suwinski to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Advice: It’s a surprising turn of events for the 25-year-old who posted 26 home runs and 13 steals in 144 games in 2023. Suwinski was attempting to make clear changes to his approach in 2024, being more aggressive in the zone as he tried to combat his high called-strike rate from 2023. Unfortunately, that aggressive approach also led to Suwinski swinging more at pitches outside the strike zone, so while his swinging strike rate and strikeout rate went down, his quality of contact also suffered. He had just a .174/.268/.297 slash line with a 6.1 percent barrel rate that was way down from his 15.7 percent mark last year. Perhaps an approach change in the minor leagues will unlock a strong second half for Suwinski as it did for Ke’Bryan Hayes last year. Only, that coach no longer works for the Pirates. • Moves off 40-man roster
The Reds designated Thompson for assignment Thursday.

Advice: Since the end of the 2023 season, Thompson has now been DFA'd on four occasions; twice by the Reds, and one apiece by the Yankees and Twins. Thompson won a spot on the Reds' Opening Day roster and hit .111 over 18 at-bats in 17 games before he was sent to Double-A Chattanooga on May 7. The 25-year-old outfielder had posted a .557 OPS in nine games since reporting to Chattanooga and was deemed expendable from the 40-man roster with the Reds opting to clear a spot for right-hander Brett Kennedy, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Louisville. • Bubba Thompson designated for assignment by Reds
Reds designated OF Bubba Thompson for assignment.

Advice: Sadly, this is becoming a bit of a trend for the former first-round pick. Thompson has elite speed but can’t seem to hit enough to stick with an organization. He slashed just .111/.111/.167 with only two hits across his 18 plate appearances with the Reds this season and was demoted to Double-A at the beginning of May where he hit .200/.243/.314 with one home run and two steals across nine games. The 25-year-old will try to latch on with another team. Rotoworld Today, 9:27 am

  • Rehab assignment continuing
Andujar (knee) is slated to remain at Triple-A Las Vegas for several more rehab games, per the Associated Press, and he went 0-for-4 with a walk in the Aviators' loss to Tacoma on Wednesday.

Advice: Andujar put in a full game's worth of plate appearances at designated hitter, and he's apparently set to spend at least a few more days with Las Vegas before activation is considered. The veteran has played four games with the Aviators so far, hitting .357 (5-for-14) with three doubles, five RBI, Wednesday's walk and a run. However, he's only played defense in one of those contests, logging six innings in left field against El Paso on Saturday. Rotowire.com Today, 9:21 am

  • Fraley remains out of Reds lineup on Thursday
Jake Fraley (hand) is out of the lineup on Thursday with Nick Martini starting in right field again.

Advice: Fraley was hit on the hand on Tuesday but the x-rays came back negative. He’s still dealing with some soreness, so the Reds will give him another day off with Nick Martini in the lineup hitting sixth. Rotoworld Today, 9:19 am

  • TJ Friedl hopes to take batting practice soon
According to The Enquirer’s Charlie Goldsmith, TJ Friedl (broken thumb) “continues to progress” and hopes to take “batting practice soon.”

Advice: TJ Friedl is back to hitting off flips as he works back from a broken thumb. Once he is able to take batting practice, his next step will likely be live at-bats and a rehab assignment. It’s possible that he could be back around mid-June but it will depend on how his thumb feels while taking live swings. Rotoworld Today, 9:15 am

  • Plans to test out hand with swings
Fraley plans to test out his injured right hand with some swings Thursday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Advice: X-rays on Fraley's hand came back clean after he exited Tuesday's contest versus the Padres following a hit by pitch. However, he still has some swelling and will be absent from the lineup Thursday for a second straight day. Consider the outfielder day-to-day. Rotowire.com Today, 8:39 am

  • Solo homer in loss
Bleday went 1-for-5 with a solo homer in Wednesday's extra-innings loss to the Rockies.

Advice: Bleday lifted a solo homer off Austin Gomber in his second at-bat of the game to cut the Rockies' lead to one run, while also extending his hitting streak to five games. It was the outfielder's sixth home run this season and third in the month of May, where he's now batting .250 with 10 RBI and 10 runs scored. Bleday has also scored a run in three straight games.
