      Advice: There’s a bit of lingering uncertainty regarding Scherzer’s potential return timeline after he was abruptly pulled off a minor league rehab assignment earlier this month to address a nerve issue leading to issues with his right thumb.       Steele did not factor into the decision Monday against Milwaukee, allowing three hits and one walk over seven shutout innings. He struck out eight.

      Advice: Steele posted his best start since returning from a hamstring injury May 6, generating 13 whiffs in 93 total pitches. The Cubs lefty limited a ferocious Brewers offense that entered with the fourth-best team wRC+ at 115, allowing Milwaukee to scatter only four singles.       Justin Steele threw seven shutout innings and got a no-decision against the Brewers on Monday.



      Advice: Steele allowed three hits, a walk and struck out eight. He looked like the pitcher we saw last year who had a 3.06 ERA and 176 strikeouts. Steele lowered his ERA to 4.45, but there should still be room for growth as his xFIP is 3.71. The 28-year-old left-hander is set to face the Reds on the road this weekend.

    • Scoreless streak ends in loss
      Crochet (5-5) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out 11 over six innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Orioles.

      Advice: Crochet was able to extend his scoreless streak to 24 innings, which began with his last two frames versus the Cardinals on May 5. It came to a close when Adley Rutschman took him deep in the sixth inning of Sunday's contest, and that was enough to snap Crochet's four-start winning streak as well. On the bright side, he earned a fifth straight quality start and reached double-digit strikeouts for the third time this year. Crochet is at a 3.68 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 85:14 K:BB through 63.2 innings over 12 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road versus the Brewers.     • Garrett Crochet takes tough luck loss on Sunday
      Garrett Crochet allowed two runs on three hits over six innings in a loss to the Orioles on Sunday.

      Advice: Crochet struck out 11 and walked just one, but the two-run homer he allowed to Adley Rutschman in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game. The left-hander tied the Orioles up all day, getting 18 whiffs for a 38 percent whiff rate and 37 percent CSW. He now has a 3.68 ERA on the season with 85 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings. Anybody who dropped him after his poor three-start stretch against the Twins, Phillies, and Reds in mid-April is probably kicking themselves now as Crochet has allowed just five total earned runs in six starts since then.     • Yusei Kikuchi struggles through three innings
      Yusei Kikuchi was pulled after allowing five runs and eight hits in three innings Sunday against the Tigers.

      Advice: Kikuchi’s velocity was down 1.5 mph on this fastball and about 2.5 mph on his secondary pitches today, and he failed to record a strikeout against the 17 batters he faced. It was easily his worst performance of the year. Hopefully, the velocity drop can be explained by an illness or something else minor. Rotoworld Sunday, 12:27 pm
       
    • Roughed up in no-decision
      Kikuchi escaped Sunday's 14-11 loss to Detroit with a no-decision, yielding five earned runs on eight hits over just three innings. He did not record a walk or strikeout.

      Advice: Kikuchi got roughed up in this one, surrendering four extra-base hits including a solo home run to Spencer Torkelson. The five earned runs are a season high for Kikuchi, who entered this game on a four-game streak allowing two runs or fewer. The 32-year-old still sports a solid 3.25 ERA after Sunday's outing, but more regression could be coming if his 0.74 HR/9 normalizes to his career average of 1.56.       Buehler (1-2) took the loss to the Reds on Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings.

      Advice: Buehler didn't have his best stuff in this one, as evidenced by the fact that he induced only six swings and misses on 91 pitches and also served up a pair of solo homers. It was a step backward from his previous outing, but this was just his third start back from Tommy John surgery, and ups and downs are to be expected after the long layoff.       Walker Buehler suffered his second defeat of the season on Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings against the Reds in Cincinnati.

      Advice: Buehler punched out four batters on the night while issuing one base on balls. His trouble in this one stemmed from his inability to keep the ball in the yard, as Spencer Steer slugged a solo homer in the first inning and Will Benson blasted another in the second. The 29-year-old hurler got six swings and misses on 91 pitches on the evening — three of those on his fastball — while posting a CSW of 27 percent.
