      Ruiz entered Wednesday's win over the Pirates as a pinch runner in the bottom of the eighth inning, recording a stolen base and subsequently scoring a run.

      Advice: The speedy outfielder offered a spark off the bench after being tasked with running for Abraham Toro, swiping second base and subsequently coming home on Kyle McCann's single. The steal was only Ruiz's fourth in 16 games this season, but his second in the last three contests. The 25-year-old has also shown a welcome increase in pop early in the campaign, as he sports an impressive .861 OPS thanks in large part to having laced five of his nine hits for extra bases.       Castellanos went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored during Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Angels.

      Advice: Castellanos kicked off a three-run ninth inning for Philadelphia, tagging Angels closer Carlos Estevez for a solo home run to knot the game up at 5-5. After starting the season batting .153 with two runs scored in his first 20 games, Castellanos has started to turn the corner, scoring nine times with a .262 batting average since.       Advice: Five of Ruiz's nine hits on the season have now gone for extra bases, leading to his considerably surprising .528 slugging percentage across 42 plate appearances. The speedy outfielder has seen an increase in strikeout rate to 23.8 percent and is sporting a bloated 34.8 percent chase rate as well, but the Athletics might be willing to live with some of that if Ruiz can continue to demonstrate improved pop after posting a middling .654 OPS across 132 games in 2023.       Nick Castellanos went 0-for-4 in the loss to the Angels on Monday.

      Advice: While Castellanos’s track record certainly suggests that he will hit, this has been awfully ugly; he’s batting just .173/.242/.218 through 120 plate appearances. The only players with worse OPSs currently qualified for the batting title are rookie second basemen (Colt Keith and Enmanuel Valdez). Castellanos has always been worse than most in recognizing which pitches to swing at, but his natural talent at putting bat to ball has made up for it.       Advice: Yelich has also resumed throwing, and the ability to throw from a relative distance is another positive encouragement.       Yelich (back) played catch from 120 feet Monday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

      Advice: Yelich's recovery from a lower-back strain has come along more slowly than anticipated, but he's finally beginning to ramp things up.     • Christian Yelich (back) resumes swinging bat
      Brewers manager Pat Murphy told reporters Sunday that Christian Yelich (back) has resumed swinging, but that his progress has “stalled.”

      Advice: “I think within a week, we’ll be in a better spot,” Murphy told reporters. Yelich has been on the shelf since April 16 because of his lower back strain, and while it’s a positive development that he’s able to swing the stick, it’s less so to hear that he’s not making continued progress. The 32-year-old was expected to need just around a minimum stint on the injured list, but there’s a good chance that Yelich won’t return until the start of May at this point.       Soler went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Saturday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Pirates.

      Advice: Soler's 10th-inning blast got the Giants within a run, but the comeback effort fell short. He went 0-for-12 with one walk and six strikeouts over the previous three games. Soler's power is at an acceptable level (five homers, .414 slugging percentage) through 28 games, but he's batting just .222 with a .736 OPS, well under his .250 average and .853 OPS from last season.
