    • Erick Fedde stumbles in no-decision vs. Cardinals
Erick Fedde surrendered five runs over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Saturday.

Advice: Fedde had worked around some traffic through four inning, stranding four baserunners. The Cardinals would get to him in the fifth. A single and a walk put two runners on before Brendan Donovan doubled to score two runs. Fedde walked another batter, then served up a three-run shot to Nolan Arenado. That would be it for Fedde, who ends the day with a 3.46 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 41/14 K/BB ratio across 39 innings. He lines up for a matchup against the Guardians in Chicago on Thursday. • Cristian Javier (neck) throws 68 pitches in rehab start
Cristian Javier (neck) made his first minor league rehab start at Double-A Corpus Christi on Saturday, giving up three runs on three hits over 3 1/3 innings of work.

Advice: The 27-year-old right-hander walked a pair while striking out three batters in the contest. He threw 68 pitches in the game, 39 of those for strikes. There had been speculation that he would require just one rehab start before returning to the Astros’ rotation next week, we’ll see if that holds after how Saturday’s outing went. • Clay Holmes picks up four-out save vs. Tigers
Clay Holmes hurled a scoreless 1 1/3 innings to get a save Saturday against the Tigers.

Advice: Holmes gave up one hit while picking up a pair of strikeouts. This now makes 16 consecutive appearances to begin the year where he hasn’t allowed a run, and he’s already up to 11 saves on the season. Can’t do much better than that. Rotoworld Today, 12:48 pm

    • On base four times Friday
Arozarena went 1-for-2 with three walks, a solo home run and a second run scored in Friday's 10-8 win over the Mets.

Advice: The 29-year-old outfielder has had a brutal start to 2024 that includes what would be a career-high 29.1 percent strikeout rate and a career-low .455 OPS, but Arozarena came through with a solid performance in a wild win. His fourth-inning long ball off Dedniel Nunez was his fourth homer in 32 games to go along with four steals, and Arozarena has contributed a respectable 14 runs and 15 RBI despite his woeful .145/.242/.265 slash line. • Randy Arozarena blasts mammoth homer as Rays win
Randy Arozarena blasted a 445-foot home run on Friday, helping to power the Rays to a 10-8 victory over the Mets.

Advice: Wearing the Rays’ new city connect uniforms for the first time, the slumping 29-year-old outfielder appeared to be re-energized. He drew a walk in the third inning and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Alex Jackson. Arozarena then demolished a 1-1 fastball from Dedniel Nunez in the fourth inning, belting his 445-foot (109.1 mph) solo shot. He also walked in the sixth and eighth innings, finishing the night 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. Even with the strong night though, Arozarena is still hitting a pitiful .145/.242/.265 on the season with four homers, 10 RBI and four stolen bases. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:41 pm
    • Could join rotation next week
Javier (neck) will throw four innings or roughly 60 pitches Saturday for Double-A Corpus Christi before potentially rejoining the big-league rotation, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Advice: Manager Joe Espada said the hope is that Javier can rejoin Houston's rotation after this first rehab start, which would line him up to return for a road start either Thursday against the Yankees or Friday versus the Tigers. He has been out since April 14 with neck discomfort. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:11 pm

    • On track to return Monday
Steele (hamstring) will start Monday against the Padres as long as he gets through a bullpen session Saturday with no issues, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: The results of Steele's lone rehab start weren't great -- he allowed three runs on six hits over 3.1 innings -- but he feels good and has put his hamstring injury in the rearview mirror, which is the most important thing. Steele threw 63 pitches in his rehab outing Wednesday, so he will be somewhat limited from a workload perspective Monday, assuming he is indeed cleared to rejoin the Cubs' rotation that day. • Throwing bullpen Saturday
Steele (hamstring) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, after which he will be reevaluated to determine whether he's ready to rejoin the big-league rotation, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: The left-hander felt good after he allowed three runs on six hits over 3.1 innings during a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, and the Cubs are now determining if another rehab start is necessary. Steele could step back into Chicago's rotation early next week if all goes well during Saturday's bullpen session. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:23 am

    • Justin Steele scheduled for BP session Saturday
Justin Steele (hamstring) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday.

Advice: Steele went 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start at Triple-A Iowa where he allowed three runs on six hits earlier this week. The 28-year-old is now back in Chicago where he’ll continue to work to get back to full strength. The expectation was that Steele only needed one rehab assignment before getting back to major league action, so we’ll see how he does this weekend and await next steps from the team.
