      Advice: Sale dominated a Padres offense that had put up 18 runs in winning the first three games of the series, racking up 18 swinging strikes and registering his third straight scoreless outing. The left-hander fell one punchout shy of his second double-digit strikeout effort of the campaign and has now fanned at least nine batters in four straight appearances, recording exactly nine strikeouts three times during that span. Sale has accumulated 19 scoreless frames over his past three starts with a 28:1 K:BB during that span, giving Atlanta a dominant hurler to help ease the early-season loss of Spencer Strider (elbow).       Gray (6-2) allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings to earn the win Monday over the Orioles.

      Advice: Gray gave up a three-run blast to Gunnar Henderson in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals were able to maintain their lead after that. The long ball has become a problem for the veteran right-hander -- he's surrendered five homers while giving up 14 runs (12 earned) over his last 16.2 innings. He's still managed to win two of his three starts in that span. Gray is at a 2.87 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 59:10 K:BB through 47 innings across eight starts this season. He allowed all of eight homers in 32 starts last year, so it's worth keeping an eye on whether Gray can keep the ball down better moving forward.     • Gray appears to ask out of game Monday
      Sonny Gray allowed one earned run, struck out six in 5 2/3 innings, picked up the win and appeared to ask Cardinals manager Oli Marmol to remove him from the game in the Cardinals’ 6-3 victory over the Orioles on Monday.

      Advice: We’ll have another update on Gray’s status when we know more. The win was Gray’s sixth of the season. He cruised through the first five innings. In the sixth inning, after two men reached on errors, he allowed a three-run home run to Gunnar Henderson. Four batters later, he appeared to ask out of the game and was removed for JoJo Romero, who escaped the jam. The 34-year-old right-hander is tentatively scheduled to face the Cubs at home on Saturday.

    • Sale continues dominant run Monday
      Chris Sale threw seven shutout innings, struck out nine and picked up the win in the Braves’ 3-0 victory over the Padres on Monday.



      Advice: The win was Sale’s seventh in nine starts this season. He continued his excellent run and lowered his ERA to 2.22, which is in the top five in the National League among qualified starters. In Sale’s last five starts, he’s struck out 43 batters, allowed no more than one walk in any start and no more than one earned run in any start. He’s been great this year for fantasy managers that took a chance on the oft-injured pitcher. The 35-year-old left-hander is scheduled to face the Pirates on the road on Saturday.

      Orioles manager Brandon Hyde mostly confirmed Monday that Craig Kimbrel is again Baltimore’s closer.

      Advice: It’s no surprise after Kimbrel picked up a clean save Sunday, but confirmation is always nice. MASN’s Steve Melewski quoted Hyde as saying: “Well yeah, I think so. Probably.     • Jordan Westburg hitting cleanup for Orioles
      Jordan Westburg is hitting cleanup for the Orioles on Monday against the Cardinals.

      Advice: With right-hander Sonny Gray on the mound, Ryan Mountcastle is on the bench, which will allow Westburg to slide into the clean-up spot. Westburg has worked to corral his chase rate, which had led to a 22.4 percent strikeout rate in May and a .281/.333/.526 slash line. Now that he’s making better swing decisions, the full-on breakout appears to be on. Ryan O’Hearn is starting at first base and Anthony Santander will hit 5th at designated hitter.       Steer is dealing with a sore ankle, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Steer was held out of the starting lineup Sunday as a result of the ankle but served as a pinch hitter. He walked for Will Benson with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and was removed for a pinch runner.     • Takes loss in extra frame
      Diaz (1-3) took the loss in 10 innings Sunday against the Dodgers, allowing an unearned run on one hit and a walk over an inning of work. He also struck out a batter.

      Advice: Diaz struck out Jason Heyward in the ninth to send the game into an extra frame. He was an out away from getting through the 10th, but Shohei Ohtani laced a base hit to right that scored Heyward to end the game. Diaz has now given up five total runs on four hits over his last 2.1 innings, which has also come with two losses and a blown save. He's given up nine runs in 4.2 innings in May. Despite the struggles, manager David Bell has not made any public comments about a possible closer change, suggesting Diaz's job is save for now.       Pages went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's win over the Reds.

      Advice: Pages crushed a two-run shot off Hunter Greene in the fourth inning to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Pages has now tallied a hit in each of his last four games after a 10-game stretch from May 5 to May 15 during which he hit just .114 with a 42.5 percent strikeout rate. Despite the mini slump, Pages survived a flurry of roster changes made by the Dodgers over the weekend and was hitting fifth in Sunday's win, showing the confidence manager Dave Roberts has in him. He's now slashing .265/.301/.451 with five homers, 16 RBI, 18 runs and a 4:34 BB:K in 123 plate appearances. His .752 OPS is third among NL rookies with at least 100 plate appearances this season.
