  • Lands on IL with lower-back strain
The Cardinals placed Matz on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to May 1, with a lower-back strain.

Advice: Matz attempted to pitch through back soreness in his last start Tuesday in Detroit, but it didn't go well and an MRI has revealed a strain. It's not clear at this point how long he might be on the shelf. The Cards haven't revealed who will take Matz's spot in the rotation, but his next turn would be Tuesday and Sem Robberse would be on regular rest that day. Rotowire.com 51 minutes ago

  • Cardinals place Steven Matz (back) on 15-day IL
Cardinals placed LHP Steven Matz on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 1, with a lower back strain.

Advice: The 32-year-old will be sidelined for at least the next two weeks as he heals from a lower back injury. Matz pitched earlier this week and tried to push through the pain, but it appears it’s too much for him to continue without proper treatment and recovery. Rotoworld 53 minutes ago

  • Slated for another rehab start
Craig Counsell said Friday that Hendricks (back) will start for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday as he continues his rehab assignment, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Hendricks allowed two runs while striking out seven over five innings with Double-A Tennessee on Thursday, with Counsell referring to the outing as "encouraging." However, given how badly Hendricks struggled with the big club before his back injury, the Cubs will give him another tune-up start at a higher level before considering sticking him back in the major-league rotation. • On track to return Monday
Steele (hamstring) will start Monday against the Padres as long as he gets through a bullpen session Saturday with no issues, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: The results of Steele's lone rehab start weren't great -- he allowed three runs on six hits over 3.1 innings -- but he feels good and has put his hamstring injury in the rearview mirror, which is the most important thing. Steele threw 63 pitches in his rehab outing Wednesday, so he will be somewhat limited from a workload perspective Monday, assuming he is indeed cleared to rejoin the Cubs' rotation that day. • Summoned to big leagues
The Brewers recalled Martin from Triple-A Nashville on Friday.

Advice: Martin was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks last month. The 28-year-old missed the 2023 season following lat surgery and had spent all of 2024 at the Triple-A level, holding a 6.14 ERA and 8:7 K:BB over 7.1 frames. Martin has mostly been a starter in the past but has made a full-time move to relief this season. Rotowire.com Today, 9:19 am
  • Brewers recall Corbin Martin
Brewers recalled RHP Corbin Martin from Triple-A Nashville.

Advice: Martin was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks in mid-April. The 28-year-old hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022 and has a career 6.71 ERA, 1.89 WHIP with a 53/38 K/BB ratio across 57 2/3 innings of work. Rotoworld Today, 9:04 am
  • Cleared to resume throwing
Smyly (hip) has been cleared to begin playing catch, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Smyly hasn't pitched in nearly two weeks because of a right hip impingement but is ready to begin ramping things back up. The left-hander seems likely to require a rehab assignment before rejoining the Cubs' bullpen. Rotowire.com Today, 8:34 am

  • Playing catch
Wicks (forearm) has been cleared to begin playing catch, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Wicks just landed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left forearm strain, so it would seem to be a good sign that he's already throwing again. A potential timetable for his return, however, remains up in the air. Hayden Wesneski is occupying Wicks' spot in the Cubs' rotation. Rotowire.com Today, 8:30 am
  • Throwing bullpen Saturday
Steele (hamstring) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, after which he will be reevaluated to determine whether he's potentially ready to rejoin the big-league rotation, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: The left-hander felt good after he allowed three runs on six hits over 3.1 innings during a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, and he's now rejoined the Cubs to determine whether another rehab start is necessary. Steele could step back into Chicago's rotation early next week if all goes well during Saturday's bullpen session. Rotowire.com Today, 8:23 am
