    • Back 'sooner rather than later'
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that he expects Abreu (ankle) to return from the 10-day injured list "sooner rather than later," Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Cora said that Abreu still feels some minor discomfort with his right ankle when running in a straight line, but the outfielder is doing much better. He will need a rehab assignment, so Abreu won't be ready for activation when first eligible Thursday. However, the Red Sox likely won't have to wait too much longer to get Abreu back. • Logs steal in loss
Steer went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to Cleveland.

Advice: Steer recorded his 12th steal in 65 games, putting him on pace to surpass the 15 he had over 156 games in 2023. Speed was not a hallmark to his game in the minors, but the running Reds have changed that. On an unrelated note, the team received news that first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand is mulling season-ending wrist surgery. That means Steer, who has been the primary fill-in for Encarnacion-Strand in recent weeks, may continue on as Cincinnati's regular at first base. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 3:54 am

    • Jordan Walker posts three hits, homers at Triple-A
Jordan Walker went 3-for-5 with a solo homer on Tuesday for Triple-A Memphis.

Advice: Walker hasn’t hit for a ton of over-the-fence power as Tuesday’s round-tripper was just his second of the season, but he’s batting .273 (38-for-139) with 13 extra-base hits and three steals across 34 contests for Triple-A Memphis. There is no timetable for the 22-year-old top prospect to return to the majors, but he followed a similar trajectory last season when he excelled at the highest level following an early-season demotion. • Cora: Wilyer Abreu (ankle) likely to return soon
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters he feels Wilyer Abreu (ankle) will return much sooner than originally anticipated.

Advice: Cora added that Abreu has already progressed to full baseball activities after landing on the injured list back on June 4 with a sprained ankle. The 24-year-old has been excellent defensively in right field this season and has also posted an .829 OPS with six homers and seven steals in 189 plate appearances. Rotoworld Tuesday, 2:16 pm

    • Takes seat Tuesday
Frelick is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against Toronto.

Advice: Frelick will dodge a matchup with lefty Yusei Kikuchi on Tuesday, yielding to Jackson Chourio in right field. Frelick owns a .661 OPS with eight stolen bases through 225 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 1:56 pm

    • Goes through full workout
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Abreu (ankle) went through a full pregame workout Tuesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Advice: Abreu is making a quick recovery from his right ankle sprain. It's not clear whether he has a chance to be ready for activation Thursday when he's first eligible, but the outfielder is trending in a good direction. Abreu is slashing .272/.344/.485 with six home runs and seven stolen bases this season as Boston's primary right fielder. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 1:26 pm

    • Sitting amid slump
Adell is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.

Advice: Adell started the previous seven games but will take a seat Sunday after going 1-for-21 with nine strikeouts during that span. Kevin Pillar will man right field and bat fifth in the series finale versus Houston. Rotowire.com Sunday, 11:33 am

    • Shifts to 60-day IL
Atlanta transferred Acuna (knee) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday.

Advice: The 26-year-old recently underwent season-ending surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee, so it was only a matter of time before he was moved to the 60-day IL to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. Acuna will have nearly 10 months of recovery and rehab before Opening Day in 2025, so there's a chance he's ready for the start of next season. Rotowire.com Sunday, 6:48 am

    • Atlanta moves Acuña Jr. to 60-day injured list
Braves transferred OF Ronald Acuña Jr. from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.

Advice: It’s a procedural move that creates room on the 40-man roster. Acuña Jr. will miss the rest of 2024 after undergoing surgery Wednesday to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. Rotoworld Sunday, 6:37 am
