    • Brandon Pfaadt strikes out eight, allows one run
Brandon Pfaadt struck out eight while limiting the Angels to one run in six innings to get a win Thursday.

Advice: Pfaadt did have some control issues with three walks and 62-of-108 pitches landing for strikes, but he was able to work out of jams thanks to the punchouts. It’s a much improved effort from last weekend when he gave up nine hits and five runs against San Diego. Pfaadt has shown almost zero consistency in his MLB career — at least not in a positive way — but the stuff is here for him to be a successful fantasy option. His next chance for quality results comes next week against the Nats. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:14 pm
    • Griffin Canning charged for four in loss to D-Backs
Griffin Canning gave up four runs in six innings while picking up a loss to the Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Advice: Canning gave up a three-spot in the first and another was charged to his right arm — and the rest of him — in the seventh after he exited. Between that the right-hander was solid while allowing just four total hits, but it’s tough to get a strong fantasy outing when you have three-run innings. Canning has given up his fair share of crooked numbers with an ERA of 4.76 over the first two-plus months of 2024. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:14 pm
    • Belts another long ball
Ohtani went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to Texas.

Advice: Ohtani gave the Dodgers an early lead with a 424-foot solo shot in the first inning, but Los Angeles managed only one run the rest of the game. The homer was the second in as many days for the slugger, and he's up to 17 on the campaign, tied for sixth-most in the majors. Ohtani has added 44 RBI, 51 runs, 15 stolen bases and a .311/.383/.587 slash line through 298 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:37 am

    • Could start rehab games Tuesday
Contreras (forearm) is hoping to begin a rehab assignment around June 18, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Advice: Contreras is just five weeks into a projected 10-week timetable following surgery to repair a fractured left forearm, but Goold writes that the catcher is "eager to push the timetable for his return." He took batting practice in the cage Thursday and has been catching bullpen sessions without issue. If Contreras is indeed able to start a rehab assignment by Tuesday, he could be just a week or so away from activation. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:26 am

    • Taking full BP in cage
Contreras (forearm) will take full batting practice in the indoor batting cage Thursday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Contreras is barely more than a month removed from surgery to repair a fractured left forearm. He was given a 10-week timetable to return following the operation but would appear to be ahead of schedule, given that he's already taking batting practice. Before being activated from the injured list, Contreras will surely need to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment, but it's uncertain when he might be cleared to join one of the Cardinals' affiliates for game action. • Kodai Senga (shoulder) throws bullpen session
Kodai Senga said his bullpen session Wednesday went well. He’s expected to have two more before facing hitters.

Advice: The Mets don’t have a timetable for Senga at this point, but from the sound of things, he could begin a rehab assignment at the end of the month if he continues to progress. Senga has yet to pitch this season because of a shoulder injury. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:21 am

    • Slow start to June
Holliday is hitting .182 with one home run, one steal, 12 walks and 12 strikeouts in 10 June games for Triple-A Norfolk.

Advice: Holliday is slashing .238/.407/.415 with five home runs, four steals, a 22.2 percent walk rate and a 24.3 percent strikeout rate in 40 games since being optioned to Triple-A on April 26. The Orioles could summon the 20-year-old middle infielder at any point, but his return to the big leagues in the coming weeks is more of a possibility than an inevitability. Due to the fact Holliday spent 16 days on the active roster in April, Baltimore would need to keep him in the minors until Sept. 1 while limiting him to 130 or fewer total at-bats in order to preserve his rookie eligibility heading into 2025. • Shohei Ohtani blasts 17th homer in loss to Rangers
Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-4 with a solo homer against the Rangers on Wednesday.

Advice: Ohtani put the Dodgers on the board with a solo homer off Jon Gray in the first inning. It was one of only two runs the Dodgers would score on Texas in the game. The 29-year-old superstar is slashing .311/.383/.587 with 17 homers, 51 runs scored, 44 RBI, and 15 steals across 300 plate appearances. Rotoworld Wednesday, 10:13 pm

    • Struggles early in no-decision
Pivetta did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-6 win over the Phillies, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts over four innings.

Advice: It was a rough night from the start, as Pivetta allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base and surrendered two runs in each of the first and third innings. The four walks were a season high, and he allowed at least one baserunner in every inning. Pivetta has been inconsistent this season, with six starts of two or fewer earned runs and three starts yielding five. On the season, Pivetta owns a 3.88 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 55:13 K:BB in nine starts and lines up against the Blue Jays next Monday. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 8:59 pm
