    • Lit up in Vegas rehab start
Medina (knee) started Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to Tacoma on Wednesday, allowing five earned runs on four hits, a walk, a wild pitch and a hit batsman over 2.1 innings. He struck out one.

Advice: Medina moved up from the Athletics' rookie-level AZL club after opening his rehab assignment there May 15, and as his line indicates, the results were far from encouraging. Medina had a similarly difficult time in his first rehab start against a much lower caliber of competition, so it's clear he has plenty of kinks to work out before a move to the big-league club can be considered. Given Wednesday's results, it remains to be seen if Medina will be shifted to a lower-level affiliate for his next rehab appearance in an effort to allow him to build some confidence and momentum. • Jon Gray on the 15-day IL with groin injury
Rangers placed Jon Gray (groin) on the 15-day IL.

Advice: Jon was removed from Tuesday’s start after 75 pitches with a groin injury. The team has referred to the injury as a “mild strain” and doesn’t expect him to miss more than 15 days; however, they said the same thing about Nathan Eovaldi and he’s now approaching three weeks on the IL. It might be safe to assume fantasy managers will be without Gray for three to four weeks, but he’s been pitching well enough to hold on your IL if you have spots. Rotoworld 19 minutes ago

    • AJ Smith-Shawver promoted for start on Thursday
Braves recalled RHP AJ Smith-Shawver from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.

Advice: This move was rumored yesterday and is now official. With Bryce Elder disappointing in his five starts, the 21-year-old Smith-Shawver will get a chance to stake his claim to a spot in the rotation. Daysbel Hernández was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. Smith-Shawver has improved his velocity and overall stuff+ grades this year in the minors, but his command has been an issue, leading to a decent amount of hard contact. In May, he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 19 strikeouts and nine walks in 18 1/3 innings. The potential is clearly there, but he needs to show more consistency before we feel confident about his ability to stick in the rotation this year. Rotoworld 28 minutes ago
    • Shifted to 60-day IL
The Rangers transferred Bradford (ribs) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Jesus Tinoco, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Round Rock. Bradford recently experienced a setback with his ribs injury and now won't be eligible to return for several weeks. Rotowire.com 35 minutes ago

    • Lands on IL with groin strain
The Rangers placed Gray on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right groin strain, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: Gray suffered the injury in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Phillies, and an MRI revealed a mild strain. He would seem to have a good chance at returning from the IL when his 15 days are up or shortly thereafter, but it will depend on how he recovers over the next several days. Gray had been slated to start Sunday in Minnesota, but it's possible Nathan Eovaldi (groin) will be ready to return that day. Rotowire.com 37 minutes ago

    • Goes on paternity leave
The Giants placed Snell on the paternity list Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Advice: Snell will be off the active roster for a few days while welcoming a new baby, but he's expected to rejoin the Padres in time for his next start, which is slated for Monday against the Phillies at Petco Park. Reliever Nick Avila was called up from Double-A Richmond to take over Snell's spot on the 26-man active roster. Rotowire.com 55 minutes ago

    • Reaches fourth inning in rehab start
Williamson (shoulder) struck out four and allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk over 3.2 innings Sunday in his rehab start with Triple-A Louisville.

Advice: Sunday's outing was Williamson's first with Louisville but the second overall of his rehab assignment, which he began with High-A Dayton on May 14. Williamson, who has been on the shelf all season with a left shoulder strain, is eligible for activation next week, but he'll likely need at least another rehab start or two to get fully stretched out for a traditional starting role. With Nick Lodolo (groin) tentatively in line to return from the 15-day injured list Monday to bring the Cincinnati rotation back to full strength, Williamson may have to settle for a bullpen role once activated, if the Reds don't elect to option him to Louisville to remain on a starter's schedule. • Falls to Friars
Martinez (1-3) took the loss Wednesday as the Reds were downed 7-3 by the Padres, coughing up five runs on eight hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out two.

Advice: Making his fifth start of the season, Martinez served up a leadoff homer to Luis Arraez that proved to be a bad omen for the rest of the game as he lasted only 66 pitches (40 strikes) before getting the hook. The right-hander has been volatile in a swingman role for Cincy, posting a 4.81 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 31:6 K:BB through 43 innings, but with Nick Lodolo (groin) set to rejoin the rotation Monday, Martinez should be headed back to the bullpen. • Not expected to make next start
Gray isn't expected to make his next start after he was diagnosed Thursday with a mild right groin strain, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: Gray was removed from his start in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Phillies because of the injury. It's not clear yet whether Gray will require a stint on the 15-day injured list, but it would seem to be a distinct possibility. He had been slated to start Sunday in Minnesota, but the Rangers might now need Jose Urena to take the ball that day. Rotowire.com Today, 7:59 am
