• Begins assignment Friday
Gonzalez (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Advice: After a slower-than-expected recovery from a left wrist sprain, Gonzalez will now begin the final step of his rehab process. The Red Sox haven't specified exactly how long they plan on keeping the 27-year-old infielder in the minors, but he shouldn't require too long of an assignment if everything goes smoothly. • Pirates option slumping Henry Davis to Triple-A
Pirates optioned C/OF Henry Davis to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Advice: The 24-year-old former top overall pick opened the season as the Pirates’ starting catcher, but stumbled to a miserable .162/.280/.206 slash line with zero homers, four RBI, zero stolen bases and a 29/11 K/BB ratio over 83 plate appearances. Getting back into a rhythm at Triple-A and beating up on minor league pitching should help to restore his confidence before the Pirates bring him back up. Yasmani Grandal was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move on Friday. Rotoworld 10 minutes ago

  • Joey Gallo (shoulder) ready for rehab assignment
Joey Gallo (shoulder) will begin a minor league rehab assignment at Single-A Fredericksburg on Saturday.

Advice: The free-swinging 30-year-old slugger has been sidelined since late April due to an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. He should only need a couple of game’s worth of at-bats before he’s cleared to return to the Nationals’ lineup. Whether or not that will help, is another question. Gallo was hitting just .122/.286/.311 with three homers, five RBI, one swipe and a 43/15 K/BB ratio over 91 plate appearances before landing on the injured list. Rotoworld 22 minutes ago

  • Back in big leagues
The Twins recalled Martin from Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Advice: The 25-year-old was sent to St. Paul on Monday but will quickly rejoin the Twins as Byron Buxton (knee) landed on the injured list. Martin, Manuel Margot and Willi Castro could all see action in center field while Buxton is unavailable. Rotowire.com 42 minutes ago

  • Jordan Beck starting his fourth consecutive game
Jordan Beck is starting in left field and batting eighth for the Rockies on Friday evening against the Pirates.

Advice: The 23-year-old outfielder has now started each of his first four games since joining the Rockies — a rare sign that they may be committed to giving a prospect an actual opportunity at the big league level. Through his first three games, Beck has gone 3-for-11 (.273) with a troublesome 6/0 K/BB ratio. His free agent bids in weekly fantasy leagues will be influenced heavily by how he performs over the weekend against the Pirates. Rotoworld 46 minutes ago

  • Jake Fraley (illness) returns to action on Friday
Jake Fraley (illness) returned to the Reds’ starting lineup for Friday night’s contest against the Orioles.

Advice: Fraley missed the better part of three weeks while battling the illness that was making its way through the Reds’ clubhouse — then developed bronchitis after returning to the lineup for a couple of days. It’s strange to see him in the lineup against a left-hander, but fantasy managers have to be pleased to see his name in the lineup card at all these days. He’ll bat eighth against Cole Irvin and the Orioles. Rotoworld 49 minutes ago

  • Jake McCarthy not in Diamondbacks lineup on Friday
Jake McCarthy is not in the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup for Friday evening’s matchup against the Padres.

Advice: It looks to be nothing more than a day of rest for the 26-year-old outfielder, who has been functioning as the team’s regular leadoff hitter against right-handed pitching. Pavin Smith will start in his place and bat atop the D’Backs’ lineup on Friday night against Dylan Cease and the Padres. Rotoworld 52 minutes ago

  • Lands on injured list
The Twins placed Buxton on the 10-day injured list Friday with right knee inflammation, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Advice: The MRI on his right knee didn't show any structural damage, and GM Derek Falvey indicated Buxton may only require a minimum-length stay on the injured list. However, given the 30-year-old's injury history, there's hardly a guarantee this absence is a brief one. Austin Martin is joining the Twins in a corresponding move. Rotowire.com 54 minutes ago

  • Joey Wimer leaves game with apparent knee injury
Joey Wiemer was removed from Friday afternoon’s contest against the Cubs after suffering an apparent knee injury in the ninth inning.

Advice: Wiemer was fielding a ball off the bat of Nico Hoerner in the eighth inning when it appeared as though his cleat got caught in the grass, causing his knee to buckle. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, though he was hobbling quite a bit. He’ll head for further testing. Rotoworld 56 minutes ago
