      Advice: Gurriel has multiple hits in seven of his last nine games, going 15-for-35 (.429) in that span. The outfielder's surge has lifted his slash line to .267/.301/.422 with 11 homers, 47 RBI, 37 runs scored and three stolen bases over 76 contests this season. Gurriel's .723 OPS is still the lowest mark of his career, but he's been trending in the right direction for most of June after entering the month with a .642 OPS.       Advice: The 27-year-old slugger consistently got himself into scoring position, but the rest of the Houston lineup had trouble bringing him around. Since missing a couple games earlier in the month to attend to a personal matter, Alvarez has gone 9-for-27 (.333) in seven contests with three doubles, two homers, four RBI and five runs.       Lourdes Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in a loss to the A’s on Friday.

      Advice: Gurriel drove in a run in the first with an RBI single, and he clobbered a solo homer to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth; both of those hits coming off JP Sears. The veteran outfielder has been inconsistent — something that has followed him for most of his career — but the two-hit night has his average up to .267 and his OPS up to .723 with 11 homers and 47 RBI through 303 at-bats.       Stroman came away with a no-decision in Friday's 16-5 rout of the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three.

      Advice: The veteran right-hander made his big-league with the Jays in 2014 and had trouble keeping his composure in his return to Toronto, getting the hook after 88 pitches (52 strikes) and not sticking around long enough to benefit from a season-best offensive explosion by the Yankees. Stroman completed six innings only once in five June starts, but on the year he still sports a 3.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 70:43 K:BB through 95.2 innings.       Advice: Scherzer surrendered a solo home run to Colton Cowser in the fourth inning and an RBI single to Gunnar Henderson in the fifth. He retired the first batter of the sixth frame but was pulled at 77 pitches, as he is still building up his pitch count. The 39-year-old passed Greg Maddux for 11th on the all-time strikeout list and now has 3,375 career punchouts.       Marcus Stroman allowed three earned runs across 4 1/3 innings on Friday against the Blue Jays. He struck out three, walked three in a no-decision.

      Advice: Stroman labored through two very long innings against the Blue Jays. He could not put them away despite not allowing much hard contact and many long-at bats drove his pitch count up.       Yordan Alvarez went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, and a run scored on Friday against the Mets.

    • Max Scherzer wills his way to an effective start
      Max Scherzer allowed two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings on Friday against the Orioles. He struck out four and walked two in a loss.

      Advice: This version of Scherzer could be effective if he wasn’t pitching against the best lineup in baseball. He stayed around the zone, made hitters feel uncomfortable, mixed all five of his pitches, and got his fastball up to 95 MPH.       Crawford's next start will come Tuesday in Miami after his last outing was suspended by rain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

      Advice: Crawford threw only 23 pitches over 1.1 scoreless innings Wednesday against the Blue Jays before inclement weather forced an early end to his night. That game will be resumed Aug. 26 as part of a split doubleheader. Despite the righty's limited workload in that outing, the Red Sox have elected to give Crawford a full five days of rest before his next start.
