  • Pirates send down Quinn Priester after loss
    Pirates optioned RHP Quinn Priester to Triple-A Indianapolis.

    Advice: The Pirates will go back to a five-man rotation for now. Priester had an adequate 4.33 ERA in his five starts, but that came with just 17 strikeouts and seven homers allowed in 27 innings. Rotoworld Today, 9:56 am
     
  • Garrett Whitlock sharp in rehab start
    Garrett Whitlock (oblique) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five, in his rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.

    Mets optioned RHP José Buttó to Triple-A Syracuse.

    Advice: This is a surprise, but the Mets needed a starter for today (Joey Lucchesi, who is coming up from Triple-A) and the team just doesn’t have many optionable pitchers; it was just Buttó, Christian Scott and Reed Garrett. Buttó, who was 1-3 with a 3.08 ERA in seven starts, might rejoin the rotation in 10 days, though the Mets will also have Tylor Megill and David Peterson as rotation candidates then.   • Throws again Tuesday
    Cole (elbow) threw approximately 36 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday, per MLB.com.

    Advice: Cole continues to incrementally increase his pitch count during his throwing sessions -- his previous bullpen took place Saturday and included 29 pitches. The veteran right-hander sat at around 89 mph with his fastball in that session, so he appears to still have a ways to go to get back up to full speed, but so far his recovery seems to be going smoothly, with manager Aaron Boone characterizing Cole's outlook as "onward and upward." There's no indication yet of when Cole may begin a rehab assignment, but he isn't likely to be activated off the IL until after the start of June. Rotowire.com Today, 9:15 am

    Advice: Lucchesi will make a spot start Wednesday in Philadelphia. The 30-year-old has spent all of the 2024 season with Syracuse, collecting a 2.58 ERA and 28:16 K:BB over 38.1 frames.     The Mets optioned Butto to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

    Advice: Butto mostly pitched well in seven starts for the Mets, but he's had trouble throwing strikes in his last five outings, walking 17 over 26 innings. With Adrian Houser and/or Tylor Megill (shoulder) possibly rejoining the rotation soon, the Mets have elected to send Butto back to Syracuse. Rotowire.com Today, 9:02 am
     
  • Cruises by Giants for win
    Stone (4-1) got the win Tuesday against the Giants, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out two over six innings.

    Advice: Stone walked more batters than he struck out, which is never ideal, but he generated a bunch of soft contact with the only run against him coming off a base hit in the sixth inning. That's now four straight quality starts for Stone during which he's allowed one run in each. Over his last six starts, the 25-year-old boasts a 2.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 18:12 K:BB in 36 innings. The strikeouts aren't there but Stone continues to give the Dodgers excellent length and tentatively lines up to face Arizona at home to begin next week. Rotowire.com Today, 8:24 am
     
  • Decision coming on role
    Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Tuesday that the team would like to declare a set role for Liberatore in the coming days, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

    Advice: Liberatore began the season in the bullpen and pitched well, collecting a 2.76 ERA and 10:8 K:BB over 16.1 innings. Two of his last three appearances have been starts as he fills in for the injured Steven Matz (back) and the results have been mixed. Matz looks to be several weeks away from a return, so the Cards could either commit to Liberatore filling that role or shifting him back to the bullpen where he's had success.
