    • José Alvarado blows save while allowing three runs
      José Alvarado took a loss and blew a save while allowing three runs — two earned — in 2/3 of an inning against the Mets on Sunday in a 6-5 loss for the Phillies.

      Advice: Alvarado is normally one of the more reliable stoppers in baseball, but Sunday wasn’t a good example of it. The southpaw issued a pair of walks and gave up two hits, and while he wasn’t helped by his defense, it was still a disappointing effort where he threw just 18-of-35 pitches for strikes.       Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told reporters that Jon Gray is likely to start Wednesday against the Dodgers.

      Advice: Bochy said that Gray is written “in pencil” to start that game, so it’s not a lock that the right-hander will get the ball in that contest. The right-hander threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball Saturday in relief after being activated off the 15-day injured list.       Peralta did not factor into the decision Saturday against the Tigers, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and five walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings.

      Advice: Peralta had issues with his command Saturday, with the five walks being tied for his second most this season. He threw 94 pitches to retire just 10 batters as he found himself in constant trouble with a lot of traffic on the bases.       Gray allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over 2.1 scoreless innings in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Giants.

      Advice: Gray appeared in relief of Andrew Heaney on Saturday in the former's first appearance since May 21, after he was placed on the IL with a groin strain. The right-hander certainly looked healthy, as he struck out four of the nine batters he faced. Overall, Gray is 2-2 with a 2.12 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 60:18 K:BB across 59.1 innings this year.       Freddy Peralta struggled with his command in a no-decision against the Tigers on Saturday afternoon, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and five walks in just 3 1/3 innings of work.

      Advice: The right-hander struck out three batters on the day. He had to really labor to get 10 outs in the ballgame, needing 94 pitches (56 strikes) to do so. Most of the damage came during a three-run uprising in the second inning as Carson Kelly and Mark Canha contributed run-scoring singles. Peralta got just five swings and misses in the contest, posting an underwhelming CSW of only 24 percent. He’ll attempt to bounce back as he carries a 3.95 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 92/26 K/BB ratio (70 2/3 innings) into Friday’s matchup against the Reds. Rotoworld Saturday, 4:24 pm

    • Rangers activate Jon Gray for Saturday return
      Rangers activated RHP Jon Gray from the 15-day injured list.

      Advice: Rangers skipper Bruce Bochy told reporters Saturday there’s a strong possibility Gray pitches in relief before rejoining the club’s starting rotation next week when the club travels to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers. The 32-year-old veteran righty has been out since late May with a right groin strain.       Advice: Gray landed on the injured list May 23 due to a right groin strain. He started in 10 games prior to the injury, going 2-2 with a 2.21 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 56:17 K:BB over 57 frames. Manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that there is a good chance Gray pitches in relief before his next start, which will likely be during the Rangers' upcoming road series against the Dodgers, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.       Lodolo (6-2) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings in a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. He struck out seven.

      Advice: The left-hander delivered his second straight quality start and fourth of the season on 99 pitches (61 strikes), and the only real mistake Lodolo made resulted in a Dansby Swanson solo shot in the sixth inning. The seven Ks were the most Lodolo has managed in three starts since returning from a groin strain, but he's won all three of those outings with a 2.08 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.       Advice: Helsley handily retired all three batters faced in his third consecutive scoreless outing to gather his league-leading 21st save. The Cardinals closer has been stellar, suffering just one blown save in his 28 total appearances.
