    • Headed for surgery
Whitlock said Saturday that he is expecting to undergo an internal brace procedure for his right elbow, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Whitlock is set to meet with Dr. Jeff Dugas on Wednesday, the same surgeon who performed Tommy John surgery on the right-hander in 2019, per McCaffery. Whitlock appears optimistic that he'll avoid another Tommy John surgery and will be able to make a full recovery ahead of the 2025 season, but official word on his type of surgery won't be known until after he meets with Dr. Dugas on Wednesday. Whitlock made four starts for the Red Sox before landing on the 15-day injured list April 17 with a left oblique strain, and the 27-year-old was later pulled off his rehab assignment after sustaining damage to the UCL in his right elbow. • Garrett Whitlock set to undergo elbow surgery
Garrett Whitlock said Saturday the he expects to undergo a season-ending internal brace procedure on his right elbow.

Advice: Whitlock has ligament damage in his right elbow and is headed for surgery next week with Dr. Jeff Dugas in Alabama. The expectation, according to the 27-year-old righty, is that he’ll undergo an internal brace procedure that carries a shorter return timeline than Tommy John surgery. The hope is that he’ll be ready for the early stages of the 2025 campaign. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:20 am

    • Decision on surgery coming next week
Whitlock is scheduled to visit Dr. Jeff Dugas in Birmingham, Ala. on May 30, at which point a decision will be made whether he'll require surgery to address his right elbow sprain, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Whitlock was originally placed on the 15-day injured list April 17 with a left oblique strain, but the health of his pitching elbow is now the Red Sox's chief concern after he sustained the injury in his lone rehab start for Triple-A Worcester last Wednesday. He's reportedly dealing with damage to his UCL, so while the early expectation is that he'll need some kind of procedure to address the injury, he'll first consult with Dr. Dugas to see if rest and rehab is a viable treatment plan. Even if Whitlock is able to avoid surgery, he's still likely looking at an extended absence and likely won't be ready to rejoin the Red Sox until the second half of the season even in a best-case scenario. • Garrett Whitlock to get final opinion next week
Garrett Whitlock (elbow) will meet with Dr. Jeff Dugas next week to get a final opinion on whether or not he’ll require surgery.

Advice: Whitlock has been diagnosed with UCL damage in his elbow and surgery has been advised, but it looks like they want to hear it from at least one more doctor before he goes under the knife. The expectation remains that Whitlock will miss the remainder of the 2024 season — and part of the 2025 campaign as well — while recovering. Rotoworld Wednesday, 2:06 pm

    • Javier Assad walks five, gets lifted in fifth
Javier Assad yielded three runs — two earned — in 4 2/3 innings Tuesday against the Braves.

Advice: This really should have been worse, considering that Assad gave up two homers and walked five batters. Still, his ERA remained intact at 1.70, and though he left with the Cubs down by a run, he avoided taking what would have been his first loss in 10 starts this year. He’ll make his next start in St. Louis on Sunday. Rotoworld Tuesday, 8:32 pm

    • Takes step back Tuesday
Assad allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Tuesday.

Advice: Assad gave up a two-run home run to Orlando Arcia in the second inning and a solo shot to Michael Harris in the fourth. The five walks were also a season high, and it was the fourth time this season Assad has issued three or more free passes. For the season, he's at a 1.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB through 53 innings across 10 starts. He's had little trouble with the long ball this year, so it's safe to assume he'll continue to find success in run prevention if he can keep the ball down. The right-hander is projected for a road start in St. Louis his next time out. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 8:28 pm

    • Expected to require surgery
Whitlock has damage in his right UCL and will likely need surgery, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Whitlock was shut down from throwing after he reported soreness in his right elbow Wednesday, and after further evaluation, it's been discovered that he has ligament damage. The right-hander will see a doctor in Birmingham later in the week, as he could be in the process of seeking a second opinion before electing surgery. Rotowire.com Monday, 6:22 pm

    • Elbow surgery a possibility for Garrett Whitlock
Garrett Whitlock has UCL damage in his elbow and will receive a second opinion later this week.

Advice: Unfortunate, but it did seem like was coming. Assuming that Whitlock has surgery, he’ll almost certainly miss the rest of the season, and his return next year might come as a reliever. Rotoworld Monday, 6:17 pm

    • Shut down from throwing
Whitlock (oblique) reported soreness in his right elbow following his rehab start at Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Whitlock looked good during his outing Wednesday, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings while striking out five batters, but any trouble with his elbow could cause his return to the Red Sox to be postponed. The 27-year-old righty will be examined by team doctors in Boston on Monday. Whitlock has been on the shelf since mid-April due to a left oblique strain. Rotowire.com Friday, 3:16 pm
