      Tyler O’neill drove in a run while reaching three times in a loss to the Giants on Thursday.

      Advice: O’Neill was responsible for the only run of the game for the Red Sox with a double off Kyle Harrison in the third that scored Rafael Devers. O’Neill was also able to draw a pair of walks, and he improves his line in 2024 to .309/.429/.667. Calling his first month-plus as a member of the Red Sox is quite the understatement.     • Camilo Doval picks up sixth save against Red Sox
      Camilo Doval struck out a batter in a scoreless inning of work while picking up a save Thursday against the Red Sox.

      Advice: Doval is now up to six saves on the season. The right-hander didn’t allow a hit while picking up a strikeout, and he pounded the zone with 11-of-14 pitches going for strikes.       Bello (lat) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

      Advice: Bello resumed mound work this week as he comes back from right lat tightness and has now been cleared for game action.       Clase earned the save over the Astros on Wednesday, striking out one over a perfect 10th inning.

      Advice: Clase entered the contest with a one-run lead in the bottom of the 10th and needed only five pitches to retire the side and secure his ninth save of the season. The right-hander has now converted each of his last five save attempts (over nine appearances), posting a 10:1 K:BB over that stretch.       Musgrove didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts over six innings against the Reds.

      Advice: After being tagged for seven runs and four long balls in his last start, Musgrove set a season high in strikeouts and notched his fourth quality start of the campaign. While three of the four hits did go for extra bases, including a first-inning solo homer by Spencer Steer, Musgrove was able to keep his opponent to less than three runs for the first time in four starts. Through eight starts, Musgrove owns a 2.2 HR/9 after having not allowed more than 1.1 HR/9 since 2017. He's tentatively scheduled for a start Tuesday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.       Emmanuel Clase struck out one batter in a scoreless tenth inning to earn the save against the Astros.

      Advice: After the Guardians took a one-run lead in the top of the tenth inning, Clase was called on to close it out in the bottom of the frame. He struck out the first batter, then got Mauricio Dubón to line into a double play with the help of an outstanding diving catch by Steven Kwan.       Jackson Merrill went 0-for-4 with a strikeout on Wednesday in the Padres’ win over the Reds.

      Advice: Don’t look now, but Merrill has gone 0-for-19 in six contests over the last week. The 21-year-old top prospect looked extremely impressive at the outset of the season in his Padres debut, but has hit a frosty stretch at the dish of late, which also coincides with a nagging groin issue that he’s been playing through.     • Joe Musgrove dazzles with nine strikeouts vs. Reds
      Joe Musgrove posted a season-high nine strikeouts and allowed two runs over six innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Reds.

      Advice: Musgrove cobbled together one of his strongest performances of the season to date, It was a much-needed bounce-back effort after being shelled for seven runs on eight hits, including four homers, over 3 2/3 innings his last time out against the Phillies. His average fastball velocity was back above 93 mph in this one as he induced 14 swinging strikes and finished with a solid 32 percent CSW. He’ll bring an inflated 6.37 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 36/13 K/BB ratio across 41 innings (eight starts) into a road tilt on Tuesday against the Cubs at historic Wrigley Field. It’s going to take a while for his surface stats to improve after some ugly early-season disasters, but this outing was an encouraging step in the right direction.
