    • Sean Murphy (oblique) homers in rehab contest
Sean Murphy (oblique) homered on Tuesday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: Murphy caught seven innings behind the plate and also threw out a runner attempting to steal second base in this one. The 29-year-old backstop looked ready to return to the majors in this one, but he’ll presumably get at least a couple more contests under his belt before heading back to Atlanta. • Not starting Saturday
Ruiz isn't in the Nationals' lineup for Saturday's game against the Phillies.

Advice: Ruiz is slashing just .147/.190/.221 through 100 plate appearances on the year, so he will give way to Riley Adams on Saturday as the Nats look for more production at the plate from their catcher. Rotowire.com Saturday, 12:29 pm

    • Beginning assignment Tuesday
Murphy (oblique) will likely begin a rehab assignment Tuesday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Advice: Murphy has been on the injured list since Opening Day, but he has now been cleared to test his strained left oblique in a competitive environment. Considering the 29-year-old backstop has missed nearly two months, he will likely require an extended stay in the minors, but he should reclaim his role as Atlanta's everyday catcher once he returns. • Keibert Ruiz feels he needs “a better plan”
According to Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports, Keibert Ruiz is going back to the drawing board to try and break out of his slump.

Advice: It’s been a rough start to the season for Ruiz, who missed two weeks because of a nasty case of the flu and now has put up a .393 OPS in 90 plate appearances, which among the 270 major leaguers who have taken at least 90 plate appearances so far this season, ranks dead-last in baseball. “I’ve got to sit down, relax, think a little bit better and swing at better pitches,” said Ruiz. “A better plan. And just stay with it. Don’t go out of the plan. Don’t chase for results. Just have a plan, and whatever happens, happens.” Ruiz is currently chasing pitches out of the zone less than before and making far more contact than last year. He’s also pulling the ball at the same rate and swinging and missing less, so it might not be what pitches he’s swinging at as much as it’s what he’s trying to do on those pitches. • Closing in on rehab stint
Murphy (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment next week, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The catcher has been out since Opening Day after suffering an oblique strain, and Atlanta has taken things slowly with him so far. Murphy now appears to be in the final stages of his recovery, but given the amount of time he's missed, his rehab assignment could last more than just a few days. Travis d'Arnaud will continue handling catching duties until Murphy returns, backed up by Chadwick Tromp. Rotowire.com Thursday, 7:34 am

    • Sean Murphy (oblique) nearing rehab assignment
Sean Murphy (oblique) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment next week.

Advice: It’s been a very slow and methodical progression for Murphy, who was diagnosed with a Grade 1 oblique strain at the end of March. He should only need a couple of games in the minor leagues before he’s ready to return to the Braves’ lineup. If all goes well, it’s possible that he could be ready to return next weekend. • Sitting out first game
Ruiz is absent from the lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the White Sox.

Advice: Riley Adams will do the catching for Trevor Williams. Ruiz will likely be back in there for the nightcap, when Mitchell Parker will be on the mound for the Nationals. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 11:10 am

    • Gets day off
Ruiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.

Advice: Ruiz will receive some routine maintenance for the day game after he started in each of the Nationals' last eight contests. Riley Adams will fill in for Ruiz behind the dish. Rotowire.com May 12, 8:23 am
