  • Continues impressive stretch
    Brown (4-5) earned the win against the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing one run on seven hits and no walks while striking out six batters over six innings.

    Advice: The only run scored against Brown came on an Andrew Benintendi solo homer in the fourth inning. Otherwise, Brown was solid again -- all six of Chicago's other hits were singles, and the right-handed hurler didn't issue any walks for the second straight outing. Brown had an awful 9.78 ERA through 23 innings across his first six starts this season, but he's since lowered that mark to 4.72. He's been especially impressive of late, racking up six straight quality starts and limiting his opponents to one run over 19 frames while posting a 22:4 K:BB across his past three outings.     Cole (elbow) didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 7-6 loss to the Orioles, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over four innings.

    Advice: Cole surrendered a run on an RBI double by Ryan O'Hearn in the first inning then settled in over the next three frames. He allowed a single to Cedric Mullins to open the fifth and was pulled after throwing 62 pitches, but Mullins scored on a home run surrendered by Yankees reliever Ron Marinaccio. Cole maxed out at 68 pitches during his minor-league rehab assignment, so the Yankees seemed to ease him back in for his 2024 MLB debut.   • Gerrit Cole allows two runs in four-plus innings
    Gerrit Cole lasted for four-plus innings in his return to the Yankees on Wednesday against the Orioles. He struck out five, walked one, and allowed two earned runs in a loss.

    Advice: Cole was not his sharpest, understandably, in this one. The Orioles are a tough matchup and they made lots of loud contact as Cole struggled with command, especially with his knuckle curve.   • Hunter Brown holds White Sox to one run in win
    Hunter Brown held the White Sox to one run with six strikeouts over six innings to earn the win on Wednesday.

    Advice: Brown has been fantastic over his last several starts. The only run he allowed Wednesday came on a solo homer by Andrew Benintendi in the fourth inning. It was the only run he’s allowed over his last three outings. Brown scattered six other hits while striking out six batters to zero walks. The 25-year-old right-hander will take a 4.72 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and an 82/29 K/BB ratio across 74 1/3 innings into a start against the Rockies in Houston on Tuesday. Rotoworld Wednesday, 7:42 pm

    The Yankees reinstated Cole (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

    Advice: Cole has been on the injured list all season due to nerve irritation in his right elbow, but he will now officially return to the Yankees' rotation and make his season debut Wednesday against the Orioles. The 33-year-old righty was dominant during his three rehab starts, posting a minuscule 0.73 ERA while striking out 19 batters and walking none in 12.1 innings. However, he built up to only 68 pitches during his time in the minors, so he will likely be working under some sort of restriction during his return to a big-league mound.     Yankees activated RHP Gerrit Cole from the 60-day injured list.

    Advice: The 33-year-old hurler is finally ready to make his highly anticipated 2024 season debut against the Orioles on Wednesday. He looked fantastic in three minor league rehab starts, registering a 0.73 ERA, 0.49 WHIP and a 19/1 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings.     Houck didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Toronto, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks across 5.2 innings. He struck out five.

    Advice: Houck ended up one out shy of a sixth consecutive quality start, getting pulled at 103 pitches after yielding an RBI single to Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Houck has struck out five or more batters in seven straight starts and owns a 4-2 record with a 2.17 ERA across 45.2 innings during that stretch.     Justin Steele gave up two runs over 6 2/3 innings on Tuesday in a no-decision against the Giants.

    Advice: Steele carried a shutout into the fifth inning before backup catcher Curt Casali delivered a game-tying two-run double, which was enough to extinguish any chance of picking up a win since Chicago’s offense didn’t pull ahead until the eighth inning. He generated 14 swinging strikes, with 13 of them coming on his four-seam fastball/slider combo, and finished with a 31 percent CSW. He’ll carry a strong 3.16 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 56/15 K/BB ratio across 57 innings (10 starts) into a rematch on Monday against the Giants at pitcher-friendly Oracle Park. The Giants managed to collect both runs against Steele on a fifth-inning double yielded to Curt Casali. Although Steele is still searching for his first win, he's been a dependable arm with a 3.16 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 56:15 K:BB over 57 innings this season.
