Mize (1-1) took the loss Saturday against the Yankees, coughing up five runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out six.

Advice: A three-run shot by Anthony Rizzo in the third inning accounted for most of the damage off Mize, but the right-hander put plenty of traffic on the basepaths. It was the first time this season he'd allowed more than three runs in a start, and Mize will take a 3.98 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB through 31.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Astros. • Stellar in 2024 debut
Means (1-0) earned the win over the Reds on Saturday, allowing three hits over seven scoreless innings. He struck out eight without issuing a walk.

Advice: A setback with Means' surgically repaired left elbow put the southpaw on the injured list to begin the 2024 season. After an extended, six-start rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk, Means transitioned beautifully to the big-league rotation, blanking the Reds in Great American Ball Park while racking up 19 swings and misses on 85 pitches. The Cincinnati offense has been in a bad way, but regardless it was an impressive return for Means and he's fully built up heading into his next projected matchup at home against the Diamondbacks. An All-Star in 2019, Means has thrown a no-hitter in the majors and owns a 3.67 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 387.1 career innings over parts of seven seasons. Rotowire.com 11 minutes ago
  • Matthew Liberatore to start for Cardinals Sunday
Matthew Liberatore will start for the Cardinals in Sunday’s series finale against the White Sox.

Advice: Liberatore has been pitching out of the Cardinals’ bullpen all season and has thrown more than 20 pitches in an outing just once since March 30. Needless to say, he shouldn’t be expected to work deep into Sunday’s game and doesn’t make for a strong streaming option. Rotoworld 38 minutes ago
  • Getting spot start Sunday
Liberatore will start Sunday's game against the White Sox, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Advice: All 12 of Liberatore's appearances this season have come in relief, so while he did throw three innings in an April 28 appearance, this will be a bullpen game for the Cardinals. However, it's possible Liberatore could earn additional starts if he pitches well, as the Cards need to fill the rotation spot vacated by the injured Steven Matz (back). Rotowire.com Today, 5:55 pm
  • Erick Fedde stumbles in no-decision vs. Cardinals
Erick Fedde surrendered five runs over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Saturday.

Advice: Fedde had worked around some traffic through four inning, stranding four baserunners. The Cardinals would get to him in the fifth. A single and a walk put two runners on before Brendan Donovan doubled to score two runs. Fedde walked another batter, then served up a three-run shot to Nolan Arenado. That would be it for Fedde, who ends the day with a 3.46 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 41/14 K/BB ratio across 39 innings. He lines up for a matchup against the Guardians in Chicago on Thursday. • Lance Lynn gives up five runs in no-decision
Lance Lynn allowed five runs -- four earned -- with four strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday.

Advice: Lynn gave up a pair of runs in the first inning on two hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. He worked through two scoreless innings before a base hit and an error brought a third run in for the White Sox in the fourth. Lynn would pitch into the sixth with a two-run lead, but walked the first two batters before he was pulled. Both inherited runners would come in to score, saddling Lynn with a no-decision. The 36-year-old right-hander will take a 3.28 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a 33/16 K/BB ratio across 35 2/3 innings into a start against the Brewers in Milwaukee on Thursday. Rotoworld Today, 5:40 pm

  • Throws light bullpen session
McCullers (forearm) threw a light bullpen session Saturday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Advice: McCullers had previously done some throwing from the front slope of the mound, but this was his first time throwing from the top of the bump since he had surgery last June to repair the flexor tendon and remove a bone spur from his forearm. It's a big step, but McCullers is still at least a month away from a rehab assignment, with a return to the Astros hopefully by July if all goes well. Rotowire.com Today, 4:42 pm
  • Max Scherzer (thumb) currently in holding pattern
Max Scherzer (back, thumb) is currently in a holding pattern when it comes to his rehab process.

Advice: The 39-year-old right-hander was scratched from a rehab outing earlier in the week due to inflammation in his thumb ligament. While that issue hasn’t gotten any worse, it also hasn’t improved over the last couple of days, causing the Rangers to kind of put everything on hold. They’ll continue to take things day-to-day until he feels improvement and is ready to resume playing catch again. Obviously that means there’s no clear timetable for when he may take the mound for the Rangers. Rotoworld Today, 4:38 pm
  • Doomed by rough first inning
Irvin (2-3) was saddled with a loss Saturday versus the Blue Jays, permitting four runs (zero earned) on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four.

Advice: Irvin needed 32 pitches to get through the first inning, thanks in large part due to a pair of errors committed behind him. The silver lining is all four of the runs the Jays scored in the opening frame were unearned, so he watched his ERA on the season drop from 4.28 to 3.72. Irvin mostly settled in after that but still required a season-high 107 pitches to cover his five innings. The righty has walked just eight guys in seven starts this season, showing immensely improved control after he issued free passes at a 10.2 percent clip in 2023. His next start is lined up to come in Boston. Rotowire.com Today, 4:20 pm
