  • Justin Verlander pitches well in Astros loss
    Justin Verlander allowed two runs with two strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Wednesday.

    Advice: Verlander had worked around four hits and two walks through four scoreless innings until the Guardians got to him in the fifth. Will Brennan led off the the inning with a solo homer to put Cleveland on the board. A walk and triple brought one more run across before Verlander escaped the frame. He tossed two more innings for the quality start, striking out two batters. The 41-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 2.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and a 13/7 K/BB ratio across 17 1/3 innings.   • Solid in no-decision
    Flexen did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Twins, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four.

    Advice: While the White Sox failed to hang on to a one-run lead after Flexen departed, it was another strong start from the right-hander -- he's now allowed just two runs on six hits in his last two outings (10 innings). Overall, Flexen is 1-3 with a 4.85 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 17:12 K:BB across 29.2 innings in a swing role with Chicago.   • Alex Call drives in only run in Nats win over Rangers
    Alex Call went 1-for-3 with one RBI in a 1-0 win over the Rangers.

    Advice: Call got the start in right field with a left-hander on the mound for the Rangers. It was Call’s third start since coming up for the injured Joey Gallo. With a runner in scoring position in the second inning, he knocked a base hit to drive in the only run of the game.     Kyle Finnegan struck out the side in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Rangers on Wednesday.

    Advice: Williams’ strong start to the season continued on Wednesday as he was able to keep a good Rangers lineup scoreless across five frames. He worked around plenty of traffic on the bases, giving up five hits and four walks while striking out three.     Andrew Heaney gave up one run with four strikeouts over seven innings in a loss against the Nationals.

    Advice: Heaney was handed a tough-luck loss after giving up just one run over seven innings in what was his best start of the season. A double and a base hit in the second brought the only run in to score on Heaney. He worked around two more hits and did not walk a batter while striking out four.   • Zack Wheeler collects win over Angels on Wednesday
    Zack Wheeler struck out six and yielded one run over five innings on Wednesday in a win over the Angels.

    Advice: Wheeler did what he does best out in Los Angeles, pounding the strike zone and limiting hard contact against an injury-depleted Angels lineup. The 33-year-old fantasy ace threw 67 of 106 pitches for strikes and allowed just five batted balls with an exit velocity in excess of 95 mph. A second-inning solo shot from veteran utility specialist Ehire Adrianza represented the lone tally against him over five frames. He’s allowed just one run over 18 1/3 innings in his last three starts since April 20.   • Patrick Sandoval spins 10-strikeout gem in loss
    Patrick Sandoval recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts and surrendered two runs over five innings on Wednesday in a loss to the Phillies.

    Advice: Sandoval has always shown flashes of potential, but has never really put it all together for Los Angeles, and fantasy managers, over the last few years. He generated just 10 swinging strikes in this outing, but was able to consistently fill up the zone, throwing 63 of 102 pitches for strikes over five frames. A two-run single by Kyle Schwarber in the second inning accounted for all of the damage against him in this one. It was his first double-digit strikeout performance since July 9, 2022. The 27-year-old southpaw will bring an inflated 5.91 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 38/16 K/BB ratio across 32 innings (seven starts) into a road tilt on Tuesday against the Pirates.   • Solid rehab outing
    Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that everything went well during Steele's (hamstring) rehab start with Triple-A Iowa, and the left-hander will meet with the team Friday after a Thursday workout, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

    Advice: The 28-year-old hurt his hamstring in late March, but he's in the latter stages of his rehab program. It was only the first rehab outing for Steele, but if he checks out well Friday it's possible his next start comes with the big-league club. Rotowire.com Today, 3:25 pm
