Gorman notes that general manager Ben Cherington has previously said that while the Pirates don't intend to shut Jones or fellow rookie phenom Paul Skenes down at any point this season, both pitchers will have their respective workloads managed to some degree as the campaign unfolds. Jones isn't dealing with any sort of injury, so the Pirates appear to have simply chosen this week as an opportunity to build in more recovery for the right-hander, who has logged 86 innings through his first 15 big-league starts.       Eovaldi didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Milwaukee, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out four.

      Advice: Eovaldi had a troublesome third inning, allowing Jackson Chourio to reach on a leadoff single before letting Christian Yelich and Willy Adames get on base with two outs, leading to a Jake Bauers grand slam. The other run charged to Eovaldi came in the fourth frame, when Derek Hill couldn't make a diving catch in center field, allowing Chourio to get all the way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. Eovaldi's five runs allowed tied his season high, and he's allowed a home run in five consecutive starts. Overall, he owns a 3.45 ERA and 74 strikeouts across 73.0 innings.       Cease (7-6) earned the win over Washington on Wednesday, pitching seven scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and issued two walks while striking out nine batters.

      Advice: The only hit Cease surrendered during his seven frames was a two-out single by Nick Senzel in the fifth inning. Remarkably, this was the San Diego right-hander's third outing this season during which he gave up exactly one hit in seven frames, and he unsurprisingly has picked up a victory in all three of those starts. Cease had been struggling coming into Wednesday, giving up 11 runs over his previous two starts covering 8.1 innings during his worst two-game stretch of the campaign.       Dylan Cease delivered an impressive performance in Wednesday’s victory over the Nationals, racking up nine strikeouts over seven innings of shutout baseball.

      Advice: The 28-year-old right-hander allowed just one hit — a two-out single by Nick Senzel in the fifth inning — while issuing a pair of walks in the contest. Cease generated 16 swings and misses in the ballgame — nine of those on his slider — while registering a strong CSW of 33 percent. He now sits at 7-6 on the season with a 3.84 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and a 125/30 K/BB ratio over 98 1/3 innings through his first 17 starts on the season.       Nathan Eovaldi surrendered five runs in seven innings Wednesday in a no-decision versus the Brewers.

      Advice: Jake Bauers’ third-inning grand slam accounted for most of the damage. It was actually the first slam ever surrendered by Eovaldi; the league had hit just .227/.228/.267 in 79 career plate appearances with the bases loaded.       Marcus Semien finished 0-for-5 on Wednesday and is in a 4-for-41 slump in his last 10 games.

      Advice: Semien started off well enough in April, but he’s been treading water for about two months now, and particularly unfortunate for fantasy leaguers is that he’s attempted just four steals this season, converting three of them.       Advice: Cowser belted his 10th home run of the season in Tuesday's loss to the Guardians, but he nonetheless finds himself on the bench for the second time during the three-game series. Both of those absences came against right-handed pitchers, so the lefty-hitting Cowser could be in danger of losing out on a regular spot in the outfield to fellow lefty hitter Heston Kjerstad, who will make his second start of the series following his call-up from Triple-A Norfolk on Monday.
