    The Marlins placed Garrett on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left forearm flexor strain.

    Advice: The Marlins announced Saturday that Garrett wouldn't start as scheduled Sunday against the Mariners after he reported soreness in his left elbow. After further examination, the team has uncovered a strain in his left forearm, which will cause him to miss a few extra turns through the rotation.   • Braxton Garrett to IL with flexor tendon strain
    Marlins placed LHP Braxton Garrett on the 15-day injured list with a left forearm flexor tendon strain.

    Advice: The hits just keep on coming to Miami’s injury-ravaged starting rotation with Garrett becoming the latest to fall victim to the injury bug. The major concern here is that forearm flexor tendon strains are often a precursor to more significant elbow issues, which could wind up leading to surgery. The 26-year-old southpaw will presumably undergo a battery of tests to determine the severity of the issue after experiencing elbow discomfort earlier this week.   • Hit hard Saturday
    Berrios (6-6) allowed five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three over five innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Guardians.

    Advice: The Guardians aren't known for power, but they tagged Berrios with three home runs -- Bo Naylor, Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan all took the right-hander deep. With seven homers allowed over his last four starts, Berrios' trouble with the long ball is becoming a concern. He's given up 14 runs across 22.2 innings in that span and now has a 3.43 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 68:23 K:BB through 97 innings across 16 starts this season.   • Berrios allows five runs in loss against Guardians
    Jose Berrios allowed five runs in five innings and took the loss against the Guardians on Saturday.



    Advice: Berrios gave up six hits, walked one and struck out three. Home runs have been a problem for Berrios this year and he allowed three more of them on Saturday. He’s now allowed a total of 17 home runs in 16 starts. His 1.58 HR/9 would be a career-high. The 30-year-old right-hander is set to face the Yankees at home next weekend.

  • Braxton Garrett dealing with elbow discomfort
    MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola reports Braxton Garrett won’t start Sunday against the Mariners due to left elbow discomfort.

    Advice: It’s a virtual lock that Garrett will land on the injured list later this weekend and it’s yet another devastating hit to Miami’s injury-depleted starting rotation. At this point, there’s almost nobody left from the Marlins’ pre-season pitching plans.     Advice: Garrett reported having problems in his elbow following a bullpen session Friday, so the Marlins will play it safe and hold him out of Sunday's contest. The 26-year-old southpaw will undergo further testing, and the results will help determine if he needs to spend some time on the injured list.     Pepiot came away with a no-decision in Friday's 10-3 win over the Pirates, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out three.

    Advice: Despite the impressive offensive support, Pepiot wasn't efficient enough to qualify for his fifth win of the year and got the hook after 74 pitches (41 strikes). The right-hander tied his season high with the four free passes, while the three strikeouts tied his season low. Through four starts in June, he's stumbled to a 6.30 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB through 20 innings, and Friday's outing was his first this month in which he didn't serve up a homer.   • Ryan Pepiot unravels in fourth inning
    Ryan Pepiot allowed two earned runs in 3 1/3 on Friday against the Pirates. He walked four and struck out three.

    Advice: Pepiot started strong with three punch outs in his first three innings and held a big lead. He looked to be in complete control until a lead-off walk to Rowdy Tellez in the bottom of the fourth and wouldn’t make it through the inning. His line could’ve been worse as he left the game with the bases loaded and one out, but Colin Poche got out of the jam with a double-play ball. It seemed he didn’t have a feel for his slider in this one as he threw just three. That pitch has been a difference-maker for him this season and it would be a concern if he took it out of his repertoire going forward. Rotoworld Friday, 6:29 pm
     
  • Ekes out quality start Wednesday
    Pfaadt (3-6) took the loss Wednesday, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks over 6.1 innings as the Diamondbacks fell 3-1 to the Nationals. He failed to strike out a batter.

    Advice: To say the 25-year-old right-hander wasn't fooling anyone Wednesday would be an understatement. Pfaadt not only came up empty in strikeouts while issuing a season high in walks, he didn't generate a single swinging strike among his 77 pitches. He was still able to produce enough weak contact to deliver his second straight quality start and eighth of the season, however. Pfaadt will take a 4.37 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 84:22 K:BB through 90.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Twins. Rotowire.com Thursday, 6:11 am
