  • Tosses quality start for fourth win
    King (4-4) picked up the win Wednesday, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks over 6.2 innings in a 7-3 victory over the Reds. He struck out six.

    Advice: The right-hander delivered his fifth quality start of the year, and his third in four May outings, on 92 pitches (62 strikes). King has had trouble maintaining consistency as he adjusts to being a full-time starting pitcher, but his 3.24 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB through 25 innings this month is encouraging.   • Merrill Kelly heading for follow-up MRI exam
    Merrill Kelly is scheduled to undergo a follow-up MRI exam on his injured shoulder this week to see how he is progressing.

    Advice: Kelly has been shelved since mid-April due to a right shoulder strain. Hopefully after this week’s exam, we’ll at least get some sort of timeline on how long it’ll be before we see him on a big league mound again.   • Finds trouble in fifth inning
    Pepiot allowed three runs on two hits, four walks and a hit batsman while striking out three over four-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Red Sox on Wednesday.

    Advice: Pepiot returned from a lower left leg contusion that sent him to the injured list. He was cruising through the first four innings, but he put three straight batters on base to begin the fifth. Richard Lovelady couldn't slow down the Boston offense, leaving Pepiot to settle for a no-decision. The 26-year-old right-hander threw just 37 of 66 pitches for strikes in his return from injury. Pepiot now has a 3.98 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 44:15 K:BB over 40.2 innings across eight starts. It's unclear if his limited workload came from a pitch count or just the natural flow of the game.   • Scheduled for MRI
    Manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Kelly will undergo an MRI later this week to see how his strained right shoulder is progressing, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

    Advice: Kelly's shoulder has kept him out of action since April 23, though he may be able to begin a throwing program in the near future if his MRI results come back clean. If the 35-year-old righty is cleared to begin throwing, a more defined return timeline may emerge, although he isn't eligible to return to Arizona's rotation until June 22.   • Ryan Pepiot shaky in return
    Ryan Pepiot allowed three earned runs across four innings in his return to the Rays’ rotation. He walked four and struck out three against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

    Advice: Pepiot had been on the shelf since May 5th after a Starling Marte line drive struck his leg and sent him to the IL. He was cruising early, but unraveled a bit in the fifth inning allowing the first three batters to reach base before being pulled. Both of his inherited runners came around to score. Pepiot leaned on his fastball, throwing it for two thirds of his pitches, and didn’t seem to have the best feel of his slider as the Red Sox swung and missed at it just once.   • Michael King posts quality start in win over Reds
    Michael King logged a quality start in Wednesday’s victory over the Reds, allowing three runs on three hits over his 6 2/3 frames.

    Advice: King struck out six batters on the night while issuing a pair of walks. The inconsistent right-hander has made a habit of winning in tough spots this year, and against the Reds in Cincinnati would certainly qualify. He served up a solo homer to Jeimer Candelario in the opening inning, then gave up a two-out, two-run double to Tyler Stephenson in the six. King generated 12 swings and misses on 92 pitches on the night — eight of those on his changeup — while posting a CSW of 30 percent.   • Alex Bregman goes 0-for-4 against Angels
    Alex Bregman went 0-for-4 as the Astros’ cleanup hitter Wednesday to finish hitless in the series against the Angels.

    Advice: Bregman had three homers in two games against the A’s early last week, prompting the Astros to return him to the cleanup spot, but since then, he’s 4-for-31 with one RBI in eight games. It’s hard to imagine Bregman remaining this bad, but he’s long posted subpar BABIPs and his typically average exit velocity numbers are worse than usual right now.   • Jhoan Durán gives up homer before earning save
    Jhoan Durán picked up his fourth save Wednesday despite giving up a homer in the ninth against the Nationals.

    Advice: The homer from Joey Meneses led off the ninth in a two-run game. The next batter singled, at which point Dave Martinez put in speedy Rule 5 pick Nasim Nuñez to run. Martinez, though, just couldn’t help himself and still gave away an out to have Ildemaro Vargas bunt Nuñez over when Nuñez most likely could have stolen the base on his own.
