• Volpe out of the lead-off spot on Thursday
Anthony Volpe is starting at shortstop but batting sixth on Thursday against the Reds.

Advice: It’s the first time since April 10th that Volpe will be in the lineup and not be leading off. However, it appears to be a move that was a long time coming. Since Volpe moved into the leadoff spot, he has had the worst on-base percentage among every Yankees player with at least 250 plate appearances. He also ranks as the third-worst leadoff hitter in baseball with his 87 wRC+. Considering the Yankees’ lead-off hitter bats in front of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, the team needs somebody who can consistently get on base and be driven in by those two studs. Ben Rice will get that shot on Thursday. Rotoworld 37 minutes ago

  • Senga’s next rehab start will be at Triple-A
Kodai Senga (shoulder) will make his next start at Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: Senga threw 2 2/3 perfect innings on Wednesday in a minor league rehab start for High-A Brooklyn, striking out six on the day. He will now start in Triple-A on Tuesday and will throw 50 pitches, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. At this same, Senga would likely need at least two more rehab starts after this one to build up his pitch count enough to return. Rotoworld 46 minutes ago

  • Jared Jones (lat) lands on 15-day IL
Pirates placed RHP Jared Jones on the 15-day injured list with a strained lat.

Advice: Jones was removed from Wednesday night’s game after 78 pitches with a strained lat. The team didn’t express much concern over the injury, but Jones found himself on the injured list anyway on Thursday morning. With the Pirates already planning to limit Jones’ innings in his rookie season, this would seem to be an easy way to pause Jones’ innings count for a little bit and bring him back after the All-Star break without having the massage his innings as much. • Moving rehab to Triple-A
Senga (shoulder) is expected to make his next rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Advice: The 31-year-old threw 35 pitches over 2.2 frames in his previous outing with High-A Brooklyn on Wednesday, and he's expected to build up to about 50 pitches in his next start. The Mets want Senga to be built up to around 75-to-80 pitches before he returns from the injured list, and he's trending toward making his season debut in late July. Rotowire.com 59 minutes ago

  • Heads to IL with strained lat
The Pirates placed Jones on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a strained right lat, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Advice: The injury caused Jones to be removed early from Wednesday's start against the Cardinals. It does not appear to be a significant strain, but the Pirates undoubtedly will exercise caution with the talented young right-hander. Luis Ortiz would seem to be a good bet to slide into the Pirates' rotation in Jones' place. Rotowire.com Today, 7:39 am

  • Day off Thursday
Vaughn is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest in Cleveland.

Advice: It appears to be a routine day off for Vaughn. The White Sox are giving Gavin Sheets a start at first base while Vaughn gets some rest. Rotowire.com Today, 7:20 am

  • Demoted to sixth in batting order
Volpe will start at shortstop and bat sixth in Thursday's game against the Reds.

Advice: It's the first time since April 9 that Volpe has hit anywhere other than leadoff. After a productive first two months of the season, Volpe has slashed just .211/.228/.301 with a 33:3 K:BB over 136 plate appearances since June 1. Ben Rice will get a shot in the leadoff spot Thursday. Rotowire.com Today, 7:12 am

  • Taking seat against southpaw
Gorman is not in the lineup for Thursday's contest in Pittsburgh.

Advice: Left-hander Martin Perez is drawing the start on the mound for the Pirates, so the lefty-hitting Gorman will begin this one on the bench. Jose Fermin will occupy second base for the Cardinals. Rotowire.com Today, 6:58 am

  • Impressive first rehab start
Senga (shoulder/triceps) struck out six over 2.2 scoreless innings in his first rehab start with High-A Brooklyn on Wednesday.

Advice: The only runner to reach base against Senga did so on an error, and he induced two groundouts in addition to his six punchouts. It was an encouraging performance from Senga, who threw 35 pitches over his 2.2 frames. He will need at least a couple more rehab starts before rejoining the Mets' rotation for his season debut.
