    • Jackson Merrill homers in nine-run fifth inning
      Jackson Merrill hit a three-run homer to camp a nine-run fifth as the Padres bested the Red Sox 9-2 on Friday.

      Advice: The Padres were held scoreless until the fifth, when the first nine batters totaled nine runs on eight hits and one walk against Nick Pivetta and Greg Weissert. Merrill concluded the rally with the second homer of the inning. After that, the Padres put their bats back to bed, coming up with just one hit off Chase Anderson in the final four innings. Merrill’s homer was his 11th in 82 games. His current .282/.318/.439 line is a near match for the .277/.326/.444 he came in at least year, only that was compiled in high-A and Double-A.       The Phillies are planning to put Kyle Schwarber on the IL with what they’re terming a mild groin strain.

      Advice: They’re hopeful he’ll return after 10 days. Darick Hall could be the callup in Schwarber’s place, but he’s had a disappointing season in Triple-A. Whit Merrifield figures to get some chance to prove his worth while Schwarber is out; if he doesn’t pick it up, he could be bounced from the Phillies roster after the break.       Advice: It’s happening. Wood, the consensus top prospect in baseball, will make his highly-anticipated major-league debut on Monday against the division-rival Mets. The 21-year-old outfielder possesses an electrifying power/speed combo, and projects as an immediate five-category impact fantasy contributor. He’s done an excellent job making more contact this season, striking out just 18 percent of the time so far after whiffing nearly 34 percent of the time last year in Double-A. He’s getting the call to the big leagues after posting an astronomical .346/.458/.578 triple-slash line with 10 homers and 10 steals over 225 plate appearances for Triple-A Rochester.       Adolis Garcia went 1-for-4 with a solo home run against the Orioles on Thursday.



      Advice: Garcia’s home run was his 15th of the season. It hasn’t been Garcia’s best season, but he’s showing what it means to possess a solid floor. He’s only hitting .219, but he’s still on pace for around 30 home runs with 15 stolen bases and run totals in the mid-80s. Even though Garcia isn’t repeating the monster season he produced last year, he’s still carving out a pretty nice year for himself.

      Advice: There should be an additional update regarding the severity of the issue at some point following Thursday’s contest, but it sounds like his early exit was merely for precautionary reasons.
