After slashing .353/.463/.595 in 231 plate appearances at Triple-A, the Washington outfielder appears set to play every day in left field for the Nationals. Wood has all the tools to be a fantasy star, as he reached double-digits in both homers and steals -- 10 apiece -- with 37 RBI and 44 runs scored in 52 games with Rochester before his call-up.       James Wood singled and walked in five plate appearances in his major league debut Monday against the Mets.

      Advice: The single came in his first big-league bat, as he managed to power a two-strike fastball through the left side of the infield (it helped a great deal that, because the Mets were shifted, it was Mark Vientos trying to field the grounder, rather than Francisco Lindor).       Wood will start in left field and bat sixth in Monday's contest versus the Mets.

      Advice: The left-handed-hitting Wood will go up against southpaw David Peterson in his major-league debut. Left-handers didn't bother the 21-year-old at all this season at Triple-A Rochester.       According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, rival team execs believe it’s more likely that Pete Alonso is not traded at the deadline.

      Advice: Nightengale mentioned that “rival teams who have expressed interest” in Alonso are “convinced” he will “definitely stay put as long as the Mets are within five games of the wild-card race.” As of now, the Mets are just two games back and are 12-4 over their last 16 games. If the Mets do keep Alonso beyond the trade deadline, they will need to then decide how badly they want to extend him, but it would take one of the biggest power bats off the trade block this season.       Merrill went 3-for-4 with a double and a run in Sunday's loss to Boston.

      Advice: Merrill was the only Padre to notch multiple hits in the contest, and he scored the team's only run after belting a one-out double in the seventh inning. The rookie finished June with back-to-back three-hit games, with half of his knocks during the pair of contests going for extra bases. Merrill swung a hot bat for most of the month, and he finished June with a .320/.346/.650 slash line along with nine home runs, 20 RBI, 17 runs and two stolen bases.       Astros general manager Dana Brown said Justin Verlander (neck) has resumed playing catch.

      Advice: The 41-year-old has been on the injured list since the middle of June with a neck issue, and the Astros have been tight-lipped about his recovery. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, “Verlander has deferred all questions to the team, which remains insistent this injury is just a neck issue,” but the team has said that he’ll need a prolonged buildup and then at least one rehab start, which means a return before the All-Star break feels unlikely.     • James Wood officially called up by Nats
      Nationals recalled OF James Wood from Triple-A Rochester.

      Advice: The move was announced on Friday but is now official. Wood is MLB Pipeline’s 3rd-ranked prospect, behind Jackson Holliday and Junior Caminero, who have both already had a taste of the big leagues. Wood posted a .353/.463/.595 slash line with 10 homers and 10 steals across 52 games this season at Triple-A. Of course, he’s also 21 years old and we saw Holliday struggle against MLB pitching in his first crack at the big leagues, so it’s not a given that Wood will hit the ground running. He will also face three left-handed starters in his first three games which will give fantasy managers and Nationals fans a good chance to see if there will be any platoon issues early on.       Neto went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Sunday's loss to Detroit.

      Advice: Neto's home run was part of the Angels' five-run ninth inning, but the comeback attempt fell just short. It was his 11th long ball of the year and snapped a 10-game homerless drought.       Pfaadt allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings Sunday against the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision.

      Advice: Pfaadt carried a shutout into the fifth inning before serving up a solo home run to Zack Gelof to tie the game at 1-1. That was the lone mark against him, though it was enough to cost him a chance at the win after the Diamondbacks didn't take the lead back until the bottom of the seventh. Sunday was the third time in June Pfaadt punched out eight batters, but it came on the heels of consecutive starts in which he combined for just two strikeouts in 12.2 innings. Length has been a strength for Pfaadt, as he's gone at least six innings in 13 of his last 15 starts.
