  • Hayde Wesneski strikes out seven in no-decision
    Hayden Wesneski surrendered three runs with seven strikeouts over four innings in a no-decision against the Giants on Wednesday.

    Advice: All three of the runs Wesneski allowed came on a pair of homers in the second inning. With a runner on, Michael Conforto took him deep for a two-run shot to put the Giants on the board. David Villar followed with a solo shot to go back-to-back. Wesneski retired all six batters in the third and fourth innings before his day was done. He struck out seven.   • Shohei Ohtani slugs solo homer in win over White Sox
    Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-2 with a solo homer, two walks, and two runs scored in the Dodgers’ 4-0 win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

    Advice: Ohtani took Erick Fedde deep to lead off the first inning, setting a Dodgers record with an RBI in 10 straight games. He then drew a walk in the third and scored on a double by Freddie Freeman. Ohtani walked once again in the seventh to reach for the third time. The 29-year-old superstar is slashing .322/.402/.643 with 25 homers, 65 runs scored, 61 RBI, and 16 steals across 360 plate appearances as we reach the midway point of the season.   • Receiving start Wednesday
    Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wesneski will start Wednesday's game in San Francisco, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

    Advice: Wesneski has previously made three starts for the Cubs this season, though none have come since May 8. While he'll be available on four days' rest after having made his last relief appearance Friday, Wesneski probably isn't built up enough to handle a traditional starter's workload. The Cubs are likely to move Wesneski back to the bullpen following Wednesday's game, as he was merely added to the rotation this week to give left-hander Shota Imanaga an extra day of rest between starts.     Roansy Contreras lasted just three-plus innings on Wednesday against the Athletics and allowed one earned run with two walks and two strikeouts.

    Advice: This was Contreras’ first start of the season and he was stretched out to 61 pitches after not topping 50 yet this season. Working as a starter, he leaned far more on his slider than he had in his relief appearances and threw it more often than his fastball. Contreras used that slider as his primary pitch often last season in Pittsburgh as his fastball effectiveness waned.     Dallas Keuchel gave up five runs over four innings against the Rangers in his Brewers debut Wednesday.

    Advice: Nine of the 16 balls in play against Keuchel were hit hard, and two were homers, with Nathaniel Lowe and Jonah Heim taking him deep in back-to-back at-bats in the fourth.     The Brewers officially added Keuchel to the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Rangers, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Just one day after he was acquired from the Mariners, Keuchel will join the big club and will make his 2024 MLB debut for the seventh different team of his career. The 36-year-old southpaw made 13 starts in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League with Triple-A Tacoma this season, logging a 3.93 ERA and 1.21 WHIP but striking out just 15.6 percent of the batters he faced over 71 innings. Though Milwaukee will likely give Keuchel another start beyond Wednesday to stake a claim to a more permanent spot in the big-league rotation, his pitch-to-contact ways and lack of success in the majors in recent seasons make it difficult to rely on him as a streaming option in fantasy.     The Brewers plan to add Keuchel to the roster and have him start Wednesday's game against the Rangers at American Family Field, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Shortly after Keuchel was acquired from the Mariners on Tuesday, Brewers manager Pat Murphy indicated that the veteran southpaw wasn't viewed merely as organizational depth at the Triple-A level. Keuchel will thus be put to work right away with the big club, slotting in as the team's new No. 5 starter after Carlos F. Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. The Brewers will make an official roster move prior to Wednesday's 2:10 p.m. ET to activate Keuchel, a two-time All-Star who has seen big-league action with five different teams since leaving the Astros following the 2018 season. Keuchel owns an ugly 6.29 ERA over 260.1 big-league innings dating back to the start of the 2021 campaign, but he had been pitching effectively in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League over 13 starts at Triple-A Tacoma this season (3.93 ERA, 1.21 WHIP in 71 innings) prior to joining the Brewers.
