    • Lance Lynn surrenders five runs to Brewers
Lance Lynn gave up five runs — four earned — in 4 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Brewers.

Advice: It’s rather remarkable than Lynn has a 3.79 ERA with significantly worse-than-usual strikeout and walk numbers, but it’s a product of him having given up only five homers, compared to 12 barrels. Last year, he allowed 44 homers and 56 barrels. In 2022, when he missed one-third of the season, he allowed 19 homers and 24 barrels. Things figure to pick up in the home run department as the season goes along, which doesn’t bode well at all for Lynn remaining an effective pitcher. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:38 pm
    • Yields five runs in loss
Lynn (1-1) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against Milwaukee. He had five strikeouts.

Advice: Lynn cruised through the Brewers order once -- going nine up, nine down in his first three innings. However, the wheels fell off in the fifth inning as the 36-year-old labored through two outs before receiving the hook. Matthew Liberatore provided no help as he allowed both inherited runners from Lynn to score. Lynn has struggled over his past four starts, pitching to the tune of a 5.49 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 19:11 K:BB over 19.2 innings. He looks to bounce back in his next start on the road against the Angels. • Yennier Cano records second save versus D-backs
Yennier Cano got his second save Friday after working a scoreless ninth versus the Diamondbacks.

Advice: The Orioles are giving Craig Kimbrel a break, so Cano is the clear favorite for saves in the pen for the short term. If Kimbrel has any meltdowns in the near future, Cano might take on the closer’s role permanently. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:32 pm
    • Sharp in second win
Valdez (2-1) earned the win Friday over the Tigers, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out four.

Advice: Valdez allowed two runs on a Matt Vierling double in the third inning before blanking Detroit over his final four frames en route to his second victory of the year. It's an encouraging bounce-back effort from Valdez, who allowed five runs in a loss to Seattle in his previous start. The left-hander lowered his ERA to 3.64 with a 1.35 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB across five starts (29.2 innings). Valdez, who has walked only one batter over his past three starts, is currently scheduled for a home matchup with the A's in his next outing. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:13 pm
    • Framber Valdez defeats Tigers to improve to 2-1
Framber Valdez pitched well in Friday night’s victory over the Tigers, allowing only two runs on six hits over seven frames.

Advice: Valdez walked two and punched out four on the night. He surrendered a two-run double to Matt Vierling in the third inning, but kept the Tigers’ off the board the remainder of his night — affording his offense the opportunity to come back and earn him a win, which they finally did in the eighth inning. The 30-year-old southpaw got 10 swings and misses on 103 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 23 percent. He’ll look to replicate this fine outing as he carries a 3.64 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 23/9 K/BB ratio (29 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Athletics. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:08 pm
    • Bobby Miller (shoulder) throws sim game Thursday
Bobby Miller (shoulder) threw two innings in a simulated game on Thursday without any issues.

Advice: The 25-year-old right-hander will repeat the process on Sunday. If all goes well then, he could be cleared to face hitters in a live bullpen session. He’s making slow and methodical progress in his recovery from inflammation in his right shoulder and could potentially be ready to rejoin the Dodgers’ rotation at the end of the month if everything goes according to plan. • Dealing with back stiffness
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that Taillon was scratched from Friday's start against the Pirates due to back stiffness, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Taillon felt his back tighten up Tuesday when playing catch, and it didn't improve in time for him to make his scheduled start in the series opener. Counsell noted that the right-hander's back issue is not as bad as the one he dealt with in spring training, which caused Taillon to start the season on the 15-day IL. He will be re-evaluated Saturday, and there's a chance he could take the mound Sunday. Javier Assad will start Friday while Justin Steele will get the nod Saturday. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:17 pm
    • No longer starting Friday
Taillon won't start Friday in Pittsburgh, as the Cubs list Javier Assad as their starter for the series opener versus the Pirates, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Advice: The late change perhaps hints that Taillon may be tending to an injury. The decision to have Assad take the hill for the series opener instead wouldn't seem to be the result of any dissatisfaction with Taillon's performance, as the 32-year-old has opened his second season with the Cubs with a 3-0 record, 1.13 ERA and 0.88 WHIP over 24 innings. Justin Steele will take the hill on four days' rest to start Saturday, while the Cubs are listing their starter for Sunday's series finale as TBA. More clarity on Chicago's plans for Sunday -- as well as when Taillon might next pitch -- could come prior to Friday's contest. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 6:37 am
    • Takes loss Thursday
Stroman (2-2) took the loss against Houston on Thursday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings.

Advice: Stroman got off to a poor beginning Thursday, giving up three first-inning runs on homers by Yordan Alvarez and Jon Singleton. He rebounded to keep Houston off the scoreboard over the following three frames before being tagged for another run in the fifth. Stroman at least allowed New York to keep within striking range, but this was his second time giving up four runs over his past three starts. The veteran right-hander has been only moderately effective for the Yankees thus far, posting a 3.80 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 40:22 K:BB through 42.2 innings. Rotowire.com Thursday, 11:15 pm
