Diaz was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Diaz at one point looked like he could be a mainstay in Oakland's lineup, but he fell out of favor in a hurry and was slashing just .204/.288/.327 this season at hitter-friendly Triple-A Las Vegas. He's still just 23, though, so Diaz could draw interest on waivers from a team that thinks it might be able to fix him. Rotowire.com 17 minutes ago

    • A’s designate Jordan Diaz for assignment
A’s designated INF Jordan Diaz for assignment

Advice: Diaz played in 90 games for Oakland in 2023 but did not make the club out of spring and was hitting just .204/.288/.327 in 29 games in Triple-A with two home runs. He doesn’t play strong enough defense at any position, so he will always need to hit above league average in order to crack an MLB roster. Considering he’s only 23 years old, he figures to get a shot with another club but he needs to improve his defense and conditioning if he is to become an MLB regular. Rotoworld 31 minutes ago

    • Retreats to bench Thursday
Short is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

Advice: Austin Riley (side) remains out of the lineup for a 10th consecutive game, but after starting each of the previous nine games in Riley's stead, Short will give way to Luke Williams at third base Thursday. Atlanta is still seemingly viewing Riley as day-to-day, so Short's run of regular playing time at the hot corner could come to an end as soon as this weekend in Pittsburgh. • Leads off against lefty again
Monasterio started at second base and went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Marlins.

Advice: Monasterio started in each of the Brewers' three games in Miami and led off the past two contests, reaching base four times while contributing a home run and a stolen base during that stretch. Milwaukee has faced lefty starters in each of those contests, so while Monasterio looks like he'll remain a key part of the lineup in those matchups, he's still operating in the short side of a platoon at second base with the lefty-hitting Brice Turang. • Strong series against Jays
Lopez went 2-for-4 with a run scored Wednesday against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Lopez had a strong series against Toronto, as he collected six hits across 12 at-bats with an RBI and a run scored. He entered the three-game set having hit just .171 with one extra-base hit across his first 11 games in May. Lopez is still hitting only .223/.284/.238 with two stolen bases across 145 plate appearances for the season. Rotowire.com Today, 7:23 am

    • Getting rest Thursday
Polanco is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees.

Advice: After missing seven consecutive starts due to a right hamstring injury, Polanco made his return to the lineup in Wednesday's 7-3 loss, starting at second base while going 0-for-4 with a strikeout. The Mariners haven't indicated that Polanco experienced a setback with his hamstring Wednesday, so his absence Thursday is likely just a matter of maintenance due to the quick turnaround for the series finale, which begins at 12:35 p.m. ET. Dylan Moore will fill in for Polanco at the keystone. Rotowire.com Today, 7:18 am

    • Begins rehab assignment
Sano (knee) went 1-for-2 with a single and a strikeout in his first rehab game with the Arizona Complex League Angels on Wednesday.

Advice: Sano is recovering from left knee inflammation, an injury which has kept him on the shelf for the entirety of May. He will eventually move up to a higher affiliate as he works his way back to the Angels' active roster. Sano was getting regular playing time before getting hurt and that should continue when he returns, especially with all the injuries the Halos are dealing with. Rotowire.com Today, 6:30 am

    • Hitless in return
Polanco (hamstring) went 0-for-4 with one strikeout in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to the Yankees.

Advice: This was Polanco's first game action since he suffered the injury May 13 versus the Royals. The infielder is down to a .187/.291/.300 slash line with five home runs, 13 RBI, 15 runs scored and one stolen base over 172 plate appearances. While he has yet to get his bat going in his first season with the Mariners, he's likely to reclaim a starting role at second base. If he can't start hitting better, Polanco could be pressured for playing time by Josh Rojas and Dylan Moore now that the Seattle lineup is at full health. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:37 pm

    • Swats three-run homer
Sosa went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run during Wednesday's 11-4 win over the Rangers.

Advice: The shortstop tagged Jonathan Hernandez for a round-tripper in the fourth inning, plating Nick Castellanos and Brandon Marsh. The long ball was Sosa's second of the campaign and his first in 51 at-bats, dating back to April 7. Since Trea Turner (hamstring) was placed on the injured list May 4, Sosa is 11-for-37 (.297) with 12 runs and nine RBI. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:33 pm
