    Middleton (forearm) threw a bullpen session Saturday and is expected to throw two more next week before heading to Double-A Springfield for a rehab assignment, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Middleton noted that his session Saturday went well and he has not experienced any discomfort in his forearm since receiving a PRP injection April 6, per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat. Barring any setbacks next week, Middleton is set to start his rehab assignment, and some good outings in Springfield should mean a return to the majors for the 30-year-old.     Advice: Mervis was called up to the majors on April 23 after a strong start in Triple-A, slashing .288/.402/.606 with six doubles, five home runs and 13 RBI over 82 plate appearances with Iowa. That hasn't translated to the big club, as he's gone 3-for-26 with three RBI and eight strikeouts over nine games. Manager Craig Counsell noted that Mervis needs to go "back to the drawing board" in Triple-A, per Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune.     Advice: Mastrobuoni made the Cubs' Opening Day roster and was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on April 18 after Patrick Wisdom returned from the 10-day IL due to a back injury. Mastrobuoni has appeared in 10 games for Iowa, slashing .231/.318/.436 with 10 runs, five doubles, one home run and four RBI over 44 plate appearances.     Advice: Mendick's back issues caused him to be scratched from the lineup prior to Friday's game, and it will now officially cost him more than a week as he heads to the IL.
