    • Nightengale: Rival execs say Alonso is staying put
      According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, rival team execs believe it’s more likely that Pete Alonso is not traded at the deadline.

      Advice: Nightengale mentioned that “rival teams who have expressed interest” in Alonso are “convinced” he will “definitely stay put as long as the Mets are within five games of the wild-card race.” As of now, the Mets are just two games back and are 12-4 over their last 16 games. If the Mets do keep Alonso beyond the trade deadline, they will need to then decide how badly they want to extend him, but it would take one of the biggest power bats off the trade block this season.       Abrams went 1-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base in Sunday's loss to the Rays.

      Advice: The Nationals had only three hits on the afternoon, so while Abrams was busy on the basepaths, his efforts couldn't generate any offense. The 23-year-old shortstop had been slumping heading into June, but he wrapped up the month with a dazzling .373/.464/.663 slash line in 97 plate appearances, adding four of his 13 homers on the season and six of his 14 steals.       Advice: Bethancourt had been outrighted off the 40-man roster after clearing waivers but has now been cut loose.       The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal said “Tanner Scott is a popular name on the trade market” and “the Marlins are virtually certain to trade” him at the deadline.

      Advice: Rosenthal reported that “the Miami Marlins want a lot for their left-handed closer,” but they do expect to get it; however, it’s expected that Scott will not take over a closer’s role if he were traded to a contender. His strikeout-to-walk rate is at a career-low level and that command may keep him in a high-leverage shared role, facing mainly left-handed hitters.       Chapman went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk and three total RBI in Sunday's 10-4 win over the Dodgers.

      Advice: Chapman's been hot to close out June, going 13-for-37 (.351) with three homers, nine RBI and 11 runs scored over his last 10 contests. He hit just .190 over his first 15 games this month. The third baseman is at a .242/.323/.414 slash line with 11 homers, 39 RBI, 55 runs scored and a career-high seven stolen bases through 82 games this year.       Paxton (7-2) allowed nine runs on 12 hits and two walks over four innings Sunday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Giants.

      Advice: Paxton gave up four runs through three frames before the Giants piled on with a five-run fourth inning. The veteran southpaw had a very odd month of June; he gave up six earned runs in 1.2 innings against the Pirates on June 5 but allowed just two total runs over his next three outings before Sunday's unraveling. Overall, he posted a 6.46 ERA this month, raising his season mark to 4.28 through 15 starts. Paxton's next start is currently lined up to be at home against the Brewers.       Advice: Hoffman allowed a runner to reach on an error but was otherwise solid in picking up his sixth save. Jose Alvarado leads the Phillies with 12 saves this season, but Hoffman has gotten the occasional opportunity.       James Paxton was torched for nine runs on 12 hits over four innings on Sunday in a loss to the Giants.

      Advice: Paxton gave up a couple early runs before the metaphorical wheels came off completely in the fourth inning when he was obliterated for five runs on four hits, including a two-run homer by Matt Chapman, and one free pass. The dozen hits allowed were a career-high for Paxton, who struck out four and handed out a pair of walks as well. The 35-year-old southpaw had allowed just two runs combined across 16 innings of work over his previous three starts dating back to June 11.
