      Jared Jones surrendered seven runs — five earned — in 4 1/3 innings in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Tigers.

      Advice: He struck out just two. Jones did not have his best stuff after having his start pushed back a day; his 96.0 mph average fastball velocity was down 1.3 mph from his season mark. He did have some bad luck in the fifth; Wenceel Pérez hit what should have been an inning-ending double play ball to second, but Nick Gonzales went for the tag on Jake Rogers and had the ball jarred loose, resulting in no outs.       Miller gave up a hit and a walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his 11th save of the season in a 3-0 win over the Rays.

      Advice: The flamethrowing righty continues to dominate. Miller has yet to blow a save in 2024, and his 52.8 percent strikeout rate is the highest in the majors among pitchers who have worked at least 20 innings. Trade rumors are swirling around him, not surprising given the state of the Oakland franchise, but Miller would likely be the best closing option for any team that acquired him.       Yates allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two over one scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: This was Yates' first save since May 8, as opportunities have been few and far between for saves recently. He pitched four times between saves, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over three innings.     • Short start as expected
      Eovaldi allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two without walking a batter over three innings while taking a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Eovaldi wasn't sent on a rehab assignment and was reportedly on a pitch count for his return from a groin strain. The right-hander ended up throwing 37 pitches (27 strikes) in his first start since May 2. Eovaldi is at a 2.84 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB through 44.1 innings over eight starts this season. Given his limited workload Tuesday, Eovaldi may need to be stretched out over the next couple of weeks. That may make it tough for him to qualify for the win in his next projected start. It's possible Eovaldi pitches again this weekend versus Miami, as Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports that Andrew Heaney -- who threw 2.1 innings in relief Tuesday -- could be used as a long reliever while the Rangers' schedule doesn't require them to have five starters.       Kirby Yates earned his eighth save of the season in Tuesday’s win over the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Yates had to tightrope out of danger to earn the save in this one. The righty allowed a two-out walk to Eugenio Suárez only to see a single by Gabriel Moreno move Suárez into scoring position. Fortunately for Yates, a strikeout of Kevin Newman would end the game and secure the win for the Rangers, who have now won back-to-back games after dropping their previous six.     • Eovaldi goes three innings in return from IL
      Nathan Eovaldi allowed two earned runs over three innings in Tuesday’s win over the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: After pitching a perfect first inning, Eovaldi ran into trouble in the second, allowing the first three batters he faced to reach base, with Pavin Smith doubling home Christian Walker to give the Diamondbacks their first run of the night. He would give up another run in the inning on a Eugenio Suárez sacrifice fly. He would only pitch one more inning before being pulled after 37 pitches, functioning somewhat as an opener for the Rangers after the team opted to scratch Dane Dunning from his scheduled start. It was Eovaldi’s first outing since May 2nd after he was placed on the 15-day IL with a groin strain.       Mason Miller earned a save by preserving a 3-0 win over the Rays on Tuesday.

      Advice: Miller, who hadn’t pitched in two days, didn’t make it easy on himself. After getting the first two batters out, he allowed a single to Yandy Diaz and walked Brandon Lowe to bring the tying run to the plate before striking out Isaac Paredes to end the game. It was his 11th save of the year to go along with a 1.88 ERA. He has emerged as one of the most dominant relievers in baseball and with the A’s proving to be more competitive than many expected, Miller should easily eclipse the 20-save mark this year if he can stay healthy.       Gerrit Cole (elbow) will face hitters again on Thursday in a live batting practice session.

      Advice: It’ll be the third time that Cole faces hitters as he continues ramping up his progression towards a potential June return to New York’s starting rotation.       Eovaldi (groin) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and will start Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, but Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said the right-hander will be on an unspecified pitch count, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

      Advice: The 34-year-old suffered the groin strain during his May 2 start against Washington and will rejoin the big-league rotation without embarking on a rehab assignment.
