    • Jones with another quality start Thursday
      Jared Jones allowed three earned runs, struck out seven in six innings and picked up the win in the Pirates’ 5-4 victory against the Cubs on Thursday.



      Advice: Jones was top notch once again and earned his third win of the season. He induced 15 whiffs and had a 29 percent CSW on the night. His ERA is 2.89 on the season. Jones is pretty easily a top 20 starting pitcher for the rest of the season. The 22-year-old right-hander is set to face the Giants at home in his next start.

      Fairbanks struck out two and didn't allow a baserunner in a scoreless eighth inning to pick up a hold in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Red Sox.

      Advice: Fairbanks entered the game in the eighth inning to face the heart of the Red Sox order and needed only seven pitches to get through the frame. While effective, his usage was concerning given that he had pitched nearly exclusively as a traditional closer early in the season. It's unclear whether manager Kevin Cash might continue to mix and match the back end of his bullpen, but Fairbanks could lose save opportunities moving forward. Rotowire.com Today, 8:23 am
       
    • Lowers ERA to 1.37
      Suarez (8-0) earned the win over the Mets on Wednesday, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters over five innings.

      Advice: Suarez allowed a run in each of the first and third frames, but neither run was earned. The left-hander thus lowered his season ERA to 1.37, third best in the majors among qualified starters. Suarez also leads the league with eight victories and a 0.76 WHIP, and he has yet to take a loss.     • Ranger Suárez earns win vs. Mets
      Ranger Suárez fought for the win in what was his worst start in weeks. He lasted five innings, walked two, and struck out three in a win over the Mets Wednesday night. Both runs he allowed were unearned.

      Advice: This felt more like the Ranger Suárez of old, nibbling around the zone and unable to put many away. He was able to work out of trouble effectively as the Mets had men on base in four out of five innings and could not start a rally.       The Rangers transferred Scherzer (back/arm) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.

      Advice: Scherzer surprisingly avoided the 60-day IL to begin the season after the Rangers were encouraged enough by his recovery from his Dec. 15 back surgery during spring training to keep the door open for him to make his 2024 debut before May 27. Though Scherzer remained on track to meet the Rangers' goal as recently as a few weeks ago, it became clear that his absence would extend into June after he dealt with a thumb issue coming out of his first rehab start April 24 with Triple-A Round Rock. He hasn't been able to do much activity ever since, but he'll play light catch Wednesday while he contends with a nerve issue in addition to ramping back up from his herniated disc surgery. Fortunately for Scherzer, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com relays that the right-hander has had MRIs on his triceps, elbow and neck that all returned clean, so the nerve problem is believed to be something that he'll be able to manage.       Advice: Scherzer is dealing with a nerve problem which has affected his throwing arm. He was given a cortisone injection in his right thumb to combat the issue, but it's something he might just have to learn to pitch through. Scherzer revealed that he underwent MRIs on his triceps, elbow and neck to make sure there wasn't something else going on, and all of those tests came back negative. The righty had begun a rehab assignment last month, but he's been shut down for a couple weeks with the nerve issue. Scherzer initially went on the IL after offseaon back surgery.       Miller, who'd pitched just once in the previous 11 games entering Tuesday's extra-inning loss to the Astros, threw 14 fastballs of at least 100.5 mph out of his 29 pitches during his two scoreless innings, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Miller's arm was clearly fresh, and manager Mark Kotsay deployed his closer for multiple innings in the tie game as a result. Miller rewarded him by recording five strikeouts -- including of the noteworthy trio of Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Pena -- over his 29 pitches. The elite velocity helped Miller to his 13th straight scoreless outing and extended his career-high scoreless streak to 17.1 innings. The improved - but still inconsistent - Athletics have afforded Miller just eight save chances among his 14 appearances, but he's converted each and now boasts a minuscule 0.98 ERA and 0.65 WHIP alongside a 38:5 K:BB across 18.1 innings.
