    • Aaron Nola starting Friday against Pirates
Aaron Nola will start Friday’s series opener against the Pirates.

Advice: No surprise here as the Phillies made this decision with their starting rotation earlier this week. It’ll probably be Cristopher Sánchez taking the ball on Saturday with Tyler Phillips probably making another spot start in the series finale. We know for sure that Zack Wheeler and Ranger Suárez, both of whom are dealing with minor back issues, will not take the ball this weekend against the Pirates, but are expected to be ready to go early next week for a road series against the Twins. • Zach Eflin starting on Friday against Yankees
Zach Eflin will start Friday’s pivotal series opener against the Yankees.

Advice: Eflin closed out the first half with strong outings against the Yankees and Nationals with a clunker against the Royals sandwiched in between. It’ll be Taj Bradley, Shane Baz and Zack Littell taking the ball for the rest of Tampa Bay’s four-game set against the Yankees before Ryan Pepiot draws the starting assignment for Tuesday’s series opener against the Blue Jays. • Mariners set rotation for series against Astros
Luis Castillo will start Friday’s series opener against the Astros.

Advice: The real surprise here is that it’ll be George Kirby and Bryan Woo taking the ball this weekend against the division-rival Astros. However, Seattle manager Scott Servais told reporters recently that they don’t want Woo to have an extended break between starts. It’s possible those long layoffs have been leading to physical issues. Rotoworld Today, 1:42 pm
    • Sonny Gray will start Friday vs ATL
Cardinals manager Oli Marmol announced that Sonny Gray will start on Friday against the Braves.

Advice: Gray has posted just a 4.41 ERA over his last 12 starts, but his season has been strong overall with a 3.34 ERA. Despite his struggles of late, the team views Gray as their ace and wanted him to lead them out of the break. Rotoworld Today, 9:21 am

    • Losing high-leverage work
Ottavino has posted a 4.89 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 47:13 K:BB through 35 innings with one win, one save and 13 holds in 36 appearances.

Advice: The Mets' bullpen issues early in the season caused manager Carlos Mendoza to lean heavily on Ottavino, but the workload appears to have caught up with the 38-year-old righty. While his 30.7 percent strikeout rate is among the better marks in his career, Ottavino's 42.4 percent groundball rate is his lowest since he was pitching for the Rockies in 2017. He's also recorded only one of his 13 holds over the last month, as younger relief arms like Dedniel Nunez and Reed Garrett (elbow) have moved into high-leverage roles. If the Mets add further bullpen reinforcements ahead of the trade deadline, Ottavino's usage as a setup man for Edwin Diaz could decline even further. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 8:19 am

    • Two homers Sunday
D'Arnaud went 2-for-3 with two homers, a walk, a stolen base, four RBI and three runs scored in Sunday's win over the Padres.

Advice: D'Arnaud didn't get going until later in the game. He distanced Atlanta with a three-run blast in the sixth to put them up 5-1 and then followed up with a solo home run in the eighth. The 35-year-old backstop also reached via a walk and swiped his first base of the year. The home runs were d'Arnaud's first since June 22 and are a continuation of a strong month at the plate so far. Over 26 plate appearances, d'Arnaud is slashing .333/.385/.625 with seven RBI and four runs scored in July. He continues to be in a timeshare behind the plate with Sean Murphy and won't have a clear path to an everyday role unless Murphy were to pick up another injury. Rotowire.com Monday, 7:34 am

    • Logs fifth steal
Kwan went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Rays.

Advice: This was Kwan's first steal since June 25 and his fifth of the campaign on nine attempts. Given he missed a month with a hamstring issue, it's not a surprise he's been a bit more cautious on the basepaths. The outfielder is batting .283 in July and now has a .352/.407/.512 slash line with nine home runs, 27 RBI, 55 runs scored, 14 doubles and two triples through 308 plate appearances this year. • Pulled in the third
Singer was saddled with the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over 2.2 innings against the Red Sox. He struck out three.

Advice: Singer couldn't put things together Sunday, allowing separate two-run homers in each of the first and second innings, then loading the bases in the third prior to being pulled. It was the shortest outing of the season for Singer, who entered the contest having allowed only one earned run during each of his previous four starts. He enters the All-Star break ranked 10th in the majors with a 3.20 ERA to go along with a 1.23 WHIP and 99 strikeouts over 19 starts spanning 104 innings. Rotowire.com Sunday, 10:20 pm
    • Carries Texas to win
Smith went 2-for-4 with two two-run home runs during Sunday's 4-2 win over the Astros.

Advice: As a team, the Rangers logged only three hits Sunday. Two of those came off Smith's bat, and each wound up in the stands for the 26-year-old's first career multi-homer game. During his last 11 games, Smith is batting 13-for-40 (.325) with three homers, seven runs scored, eight RBI and a stolen base. Rotowire.com Sunday, 9:21 pm
