    • Kimbrel picks up 10th save Thursday
      Craig Kimbrel picked up the save against the White Sox on Thursday.

      Advice: With the bases loaded and a five-run lead in the ninth inning, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde went to Yennier Cano for what was an unconventional save opportunity. Cano hit Andrew Vaughn and allowed a two run single to Gavin Sheets to make it a two-run game. After striking out Zach DeLoach, Cano was removed in favor of Kimbrel, who got Andrew Benintendi to pop into a double play.       Adley Rutschman went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI against the White Sox on Thursday.



      Advice: Rutschman had an RBI single in the third inning to tie the game and a two-run single in the sixth inning to put the Orioles up 7-2. He’s putting together another nice season with a .299 average and 31 RBI on the year.

    • Rebounds for 14th save
      Holmes earned the save in Thursday's 5-0 win over Seattle, allowing two hits while striking out a pair in 1.1 innings.

      Advice: Holmes came on in relief in the eighth after Nick Burdi loaded the bases. He'd induce a grounder off the bat of Luke Raley for the final out before working around a pair of singles in the ninth to earn his 14th save. It's a nice bounce-back effort from Holmes, after he allowed four runs in a blown save against Seattle on Monday, the first four runs he's allowed this season. Overall, the 31-year-old right-hander sports a 1.64 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB across 22 innings this year. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:46 pm

      Gil (6-1) earned the win Thursday over the Mariners, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out eight in 6.1 scoreless innings.

      Advice: Gil continues to look like a star in the Yankees' rotation -- the 25-year-old right-hander now has five straight wins and quality starts, allowing just two runs over 30.2 innings in that span. He's lowered his ERA to 2.11 on the year with a 1.01 WHIP and 70:29 K:BB through 10 starts (55.1 innings).     • Luis Gil holds M’s to one hit, strikes out eight
      Luis Gil held Seattle to one hit with eight strikeouts over 6 1/3 shutout innings Thursday while picking up a win.

      Advice: Another masterful outing for Gil, one that might quiet the “move to the bullpen” talk when Gerrit Cole returns to the rotation. Gil did walk two, but he was mostly dominant with the only hit being a J.P. Crawford single in the fourth. Gil has struck out 22 batters over his last two starts in 12 1/3 innings, and his ERA is a sparkling 2.11. A chance to impress again is scheduled for Wednesday against the Angels in Los Angeles.     • Rosenthal: Gil could move to pen when Cole returns
      According to Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees “are likely to ‘back off’ on Luis Gil in order to have him as a factor for the playoffs.”

      Advice: On one hand, backing off Gil makes some sense. The 25-year-old has already thrown 49 innings this season and has not thrown more than 96 innings in any season since 2019. However, when Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked about his plans for Gil, he mentioned that Gerrit Cole is likely four to six weeks away from returning, which is an eternity during a baseball season. Moving Gil to the bullpen could make sense on the surface, but it’s impossible to tell what position the Yankees rotation will be in by the time Cole comes back.     • Jake Cronenworth playing 2B for Padres on Thursday
      Jake Cronenworth is starting at second base for the first time in the 2024 season.

      Advice: This felt inevitable after the Padres traded for Luis Arraez, who is a well below-average defensive second baseman. Arraez will now slide to first base with Cronenworth moving to second. Cronenworth has been an above-average defensive second baseman over the last four seasons, so this move doesn’t figure to hurt the Padres at all and could be a boost for their pitchers.     • Tosses quality start for fourth win
      King (4-4) picked up the win Wednesday, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks over 6.2 innings in a 7-3 victory over the Reds. He struck out six.

      Advice: The right-hander delivered his fifth quality start of the year, and his third in four May outings, on 92 pitches (62 strikes). King has had trouble maintaining consistency as he adjusts to being a full-time starting pitcher, but his 3.24 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB through 25 innings this month is encouraging.     • Jurickson Profar scores twice in victory over Reds
      Jurickson Profar doubled, walked, scored a pair of runs and collected an RBI on Wednesday as the Padres triumphed over the Reds.

      Advice: Profar worked Nick Martinez for a leadoff walk in the fourth inning and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of David Peralta. He also chased Martinez from the game with an RBI double in the fifth inning, then came around to score on a run-scoring single off the bat of Jake Cronenworth.
