      Advice: Gil was stung by both hard hits and walks -- three of the four knocks he allowed went for extra bases, and he also surrendered four free passes. His final two walks were particularly detrimental, as both runners came around to score following his departure. Gil has now put forward two straight poor outings, giving up 12 runs over 5.2 innings across his past two starts. He had a 2.02 ERA and was being mentioned in discussions about AL Cy Young Award contenders after a June 14 win against Boston, but his subsequent struggles have increased is ERA by over a run to 3.15. The veteran closer rebounded well after blowing a save against the Yankees during his previous trip to the mound.       Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI against the Twins on Wednesday.



      Advice: Gurriel Jr. drove in two of the D-Backs’ three runs against the Twins, starting with a triple in the fourth to bring in the first run of the game for Arizona. With a runner on third in the sixth inning, he drove in a second run with a sacrifice fly. The 30-year-old outfielder is hitting .260/.293/.409 with 10 homers and 45 RBI across 310 plate appearances.     • Luis Gil struggles again in loss
      Luis Gil labored through 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday against the Mets. He allowed five earned runs with four walks and just two strikeouts.

      Advice: There’s been a hard shift in Gil’s season over the past week. He gave up 18 ER in his first 80 innings and 12 ER in his last 5 2/3 frames. He looked uncomfortable and weirdly enough, these last two starts he threw his lowest percentage of fastballs and two of his three highest percentages of changeups in any start this season. It’s important to note that he threw only 136 2/3 innings between 2021 and 2023, so the 85 2/3 he’s already thrown this season are already substantial given his lengthy injury history.

      Craig Kimbrel struck out the side and walked one batter on Wednesday to nail down the save against the Guardians.

      William Contreras went 0-for-5 on Wednesday, dropping his OPS back under .800.

      Advice: Contreras has not been getting results for a good month now, but things might be starting to turn around some. He had doubles on both Monday and Tuesday.       Steer started at first base and went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 9-5 loss to Pittsburgh.

      Advice: Steer's been locked in of late, going 11-for-35 with eight RBI over the last nine contests. He began the season as the team's primary left fielder but has played a lot at first base since Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) landed on the injured list in May. With news that Encarnacion-Strand opted for surgery that likely spells the end of his season, Steer is in line to become the club's primary first baseman.       Contreras went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored during Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Rangers.

      Advice: Contreras got the Brewers on the board in the third inning, swatting a leadoff double before being driven in on a two-out single by Jackson Chourio. Tuesday's contest marked Contreras' first multi-hit game since June 16. While the catcher's power numbers are down overall, he's one stolen base away from matching his career high of six and is on pace for a career-best strikeout rate at 19.3 percent.       Advice: Santander's up to 12 homers over 24 contests in June. The power surge is impressive, though he's losing a little consistency at the plate by going just 2-for-15 over the last four games. That quiet stretch has taken some of the wind out of his sails as he looks to get his season-long batting average to a respectable level.
