    • Francisco Alvarez homers Thursday in rehab game
Francisco Alvarez (thumb) crushed a three-run homer on Thursday in a minor league rehab contest for Double-A Binghamton.

Advice: Alvarez kicked off his minor league rehab assignment by catching five innings behind the plate and slugging a monstrous three-run homer in his second plate appearance. The 22-year-old backstop, who is recovering from last month’s thumb surgery, will likely need a couple more tune-up games before returning to New York. Rotoworld Thursday, 6:29 pm

    • Not starting Thursday
Diaz isn't in the Astros' lineup for Thursday's game against the Mariners, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Diaz has slashed just .207/.221/.268 since the beginning of May, and he'll now sit down for the final game of Houston's series in Seattle. Victor Caratini will take over behind the plate and bat seventh. Rotowire.com Thursday, 10:31 am

    • Cleared for rehab assignment
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Alvarez (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.

Advice: Mendoza offered that Alvarez will catch 5-to-7 innings in his first game with Binghamton and build up from there. Alvarez is five weeks removed from undergoing surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb. He was given an eight-week timetable to return following the operation, but the young catcher would appear to have a good shot to beat that timeline. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 10:40 am

    • Francisco Alvarez (thumb) starting rehab Thursday
Francisco Alvarez (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday.

Advice: That according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, who also told reporters the catcher is expected to be behind the plate for five to seven innings. Alvarez was able to take batting practice over the weekend, and the 22-year-old backstop was reportedly hitting the ball hard as he works his way back from the thumb injury that has kept him out since April. Assuming no setbacks occur in the rehab assignment, Alvarez could be back for the Mets in the middle of June, possibly sooner. Rotoworld Tuesday, 10:36 am

    • Looking good in batting practice
Alvarez (thumb) was reaching exit velocities over 100 miles per hour during batting practice over the weekend, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The 22-year-old catcher is still wearing a splint on his surgically repaired thumb, however, and the Mets aren't going to rush him back from the 10-day injured list. The team may also use his recovery period to have him work on his positioning behind the plate, as Alvarez has a tendency to be overeager reaching for pitches and is susceptible to getting his glove hand smacked by a swing. Alvarez was batting .236 (13-for-55) with one home run and eight RBI through 16 games when he was injured in mid-April. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 7:43 am

    • Absent from lineup
Diaz is absent from the lineup for Monday's contest in Seattle.

Advice: Victor Caratini will do the catching for Framber Valdez. Diaz -- who had started the last three games and five of the last six -- has just a .501 OPS in May. Rotowire.com Monday, 3:10 pm

    • Francisco Alvarez (thumb) takes BP on Saturday
Francisco Alvarez (thumb) took batting practice on Saturday at Citi Field.

Advice: Alvarez progressed to on-field batting practice for the first time since last month’s thumb surgery. The 22-year-old backstop will presumably head out on a minor league rehab assignment at some point in the coming weeks, barring any unexpected setbacks. The hope is that he’ll be ready to return at some point in mid-to-late June. Rotoworld Saturday, 9:15 am

    • Set for batting practice Saturday
Alvarez (thumb) is set to participate in batting practice Saturday, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports.

Advice: Alvarez landed on the 10-day IL after tearing the UCL in his left thumb April 19, and the 22-year-old catcher is on track for a return by late June. Alvarez was slashing .236/.288/.364 with one home run and eight RBI over 59 plate appearances prior to his injury. Rotowire.com Friday, 2:22 pm

    • Getting breather Wednesday
Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels.

Advice: He'll be getting a breather for the series finale after starting behind the dish Monday and Tuesday while going 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles, two runs and an RBI. Victor Caratini will handle the catching duties Wednesday. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 9:38 am
