The 31-year-old right-hander has been a surprising source of strikeouts, as he's generated 66 in 69.1 total innings.       Erick Fedde surrendered four runs over five innings with eight strikeouts in a no-decision against the Brewers on Friday.

      Advice: Fedde gave up nine of the 23 hits the Brew Crew picked up Friday, and four of the six walks. The right-hander was able to at least pick up some punchouts, but that’s the end of the positives. Fedde was outstanding last week with 6 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball against Baltimore, but he’s just not good enough to rely on consistent results.       Suarez didn't factor into the decision Friday against Tampa Bay, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out five.

      Advice: Suarez allowed a lone run in the second inning before settling in and blanking the Rays over his final three frames, allowing just one additional hit. The 34-year-old Suarez has allowed just one run over nine innings in two starts since returning to Baltimore's rotation. Overall, he's 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB across 34.1 innings this year. With John Means (elbow) and Tyler Wells (elbow) both out for the year, Suarez could be in for an extended look as a starter. He's currently in line for a road matchup with Toronto in his next outing.       Albert Suárez allowed one earned run across five innings on Friday against the Rays. He allowed four hits, two walks, and struck out five in a no-decision.

      Advice: Suárez was solid in this one, keeping the Rays at bay besides for a Richie Palacios double followed by a Ben Rortvedt RBI single in the second inning. Notably, Suárez showed off a true four-pitch mix for the first time this season throwing his fastball, cutter, changeup, and curveball at least 13% of the time.       Brought in with the Cubs down one in the top of the ninth, Héctor Neris gave up a run and two hits Friday against the Reds.

      Advice: It’s the second straight outing in which Neris has allowed a run, and it proved to be a pretty big run after the Cubs scored once in the bottom of the ninth. Neris’s peripherals are still awful — he has a 16/15 K/BB in 20 innings — but so far, his only two blown saves haven’t cost the Cubs (the team won both games).       Steven Matz (back) threw his second bullpen session on Friday without any issues.

      Advice: It’s unclear how many times he’ll need to repeat the process before he’s cleared to face live hitters, but it’s nice to see him at least taking small steps in the right direction.       Matz (back) will throw another bullpen session Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Matz threw a light bullpen session Wednesday, which evidently went well. It's not clear whether he'll throw with more intensity Friday, but it would appear he's taking baby steps in the right direction.     • Allows just one hit in victory
      Flaherty (2-4) earned the win over Boston on Thursday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out nine batters over 6.2 scoreless innings.

      Advice: Flaherty was at his best Thursday, racking up 15 swinging strikes and tying his season high with 6.2 frames. The right-hander struck out exactly nine batters for the third straight contest and recorded his sixth consecutive quality start. Though the win was just his second this season, Flaherty has been very good in his first year with Detroit, posting a 3.46 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 90:10 K:BB over 67.2 innings.     • Jack Flaherty takes no-hitter into seventh vs. BOS
      Jack Flaherty struck out nine while allowing just one hit over 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball to help the Tigers to a 5-0 win over the Red Sox on Thursday.

      Advice: Flaherty didn’t allow a hit until there was one out in the seventh inning when Rob Refsnyder was able to break up the no-no. The right-hander has now struck out nine batters in three straight starts, and his K/BB for the month of May is 40/5. Flaherty has been a strong addition to the Detroit rotation, and he’s pitched better than his still-solid 3.46 ERA has indicated — especially lately.
