    • Cubs designate Yan Gomes for assignment
Cubs designated C Yan Gomes for assignment.

Advice: He’ll probably catch on somewhere, but Gomes, who was batting .154/.179/.242 in 96 plate appearances, has looked pretty much done at age 36, even though he was still a perfectly fine starter just one year ago. Maybe the Phillies will want him as a steady hand while J.T. Realmuto is out. Rotoworld Today, 9:30 am

    • Cubs add Tomás Nido as backup catcher
Cubs signed C Tomás Nido to a one-year contract.

Advice: Nido had spent his entire 12-year pro career with the Mets until he was released Monday after hitting .229/.261/.361 in 90 plate appearances this season. The 30-year-old is a lifetime .214/.251/.313 hitter in 895 plate appearances. He’ll replace Yan Gomes as the backup to Miguel Amaya. Rotoworld Today, 9:30 am

    • Three more hits Tuesday
Alvarez went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's win over the Rangers.

Advice: The Mets' offense has suddenly roared to life, scoring 52 runs over the course of a seven-game win streak, and it's perhaps no coincidence that Alvarez returned from his thumb injury the day before the streak started. The 22-year-old backstop has delivered back-to-back three-hit performances, boosting his slash line on the season to .269/.305/.372 through 24 contests with a homer, nine runs and 14 RBI. • Yankees’ Agustin Ramirez moves up to Triple-A
The Yankees have promoted catcher Agustin Ramirez from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Advice: The RailRiders had an opening for Ramirez with Luis Torrens gone to the Mets and Ben Rice quickly getting promoted to the majors. Ramirez, who had a three-homer game earlier this month, was batting .290/.372/.570 for Somerset. He’ll surely be asked about in trade talks as the Yankees attempt to upgrade next month, but he won’t be easy to pry away, even with Austin Wells in front of him. Rotoworld Today, 8:44 am
    • Pops second homer
Bethancourt went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's extra-inning win over the Cardinals.

Advice: The veteran catcher launched a solo shot off Lance Lynn in the sixth inning, Bethancourt's second homer of the season. The hits were his first since May 27, and the 32-year-old has offered little at the plate as the backup to Nick Fortes, slashing a woeful .159/.198/.268 on the year in 88 plate appearances. • Moves up to Triple-A
The Yankees promoted Ramirez from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.

Advice: Ramirez, 22, earned the promotion by slashing .290/.372/.570 with 16 home runs and 13 stolen bases over 58 games with Somerset. He plays catcher and first base and will slide into spot on the Triple-A roster vacated by Ben Rice, who was called up by the Yankees on Tuesday. Rotowire.com Today, 8:29 am
    • Productive in Tuesday's win
Garver went 2-for-5 with an RBI fielder's choice, a run-scoring double and another two-bagger in a win over the Guardians on Tuesday.

Advice: Garver pushed the Mariners' lead to 4-1 in the third inning with his first two-bagger of the night, which plated Cal Raleigh. He would eventually lace another double, but his second RBI came on his seventh-inning groundout that brought home Ty France. Garver is still sitting on a profoundly disappointing .179 average, but he's now driven in 13 runs over his last 13 games by lacing eight of his 10 hits in that span for extra bases while posting a .294 average and .929 OPS over his 20 plate appearances with men in scoring position. • Signs with Cubs
The Cubs signed Nido to a one-year contract Wednesday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: The Cubs will swap out Yan Gomes -- who was designated for assignment -- for Nido. Nido was designated for assignment himself and eventually released by the Mets earlier this month but he quickly lands on his feet in Chicago, where he'll share catching duties with Miguel Amaya. • Loses roster spot
The Cubs designated Gomes for assignment Wednesday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Chicago has signed Tomas Nido to take Gomes' roster spot and serve as the primary backup to top catcher Miguel Amaya. Gomes, who turns 37 years old in July, has a dreadful .421 OPS and 37.5 percent strikeout rate over 33 games this season. He's making $6 million in 2024, and the Cubs will have to eat the remainder of that salary after Gomes clears waivers. Rotowire.com Today, 7:58 am
