  • José Soriano can’t get through five versus Pirates
    José Soriano allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Pirates.

    Advice: Soriano struck out six and opened up with 4 1/3 scoreless innings before a double snapped a streak of nine straight batters retired. He got one more out immediately afterwards, but he then walked two, gave up a three-run double to Oneil Cruz and an RBI single to Connor Joe, which ended his day. There’s a great deal to like about Soriano’s stuff, but considering that he never worked as a starter above A-ball coming into this season, he’s not at all a finished product. He’ll get more consistent, but since he’s likely to be on a pretty restrictive innings limit, he might not be much of a factor in fantasy leagues until next year. Rotoworld 21 minutes ago

  • Martín Pérez charged with four runs versus Angels
    Martín Pérez yielded four runs in five-plus innings Wednesday versus the Angels.

    Advice: It was two runs through five, but Pérez allowed two singles to start the sixth and both runners came around to score off Luis Ortiz. Pérez struck out five and walked none.   • Called up ahead of Wednesday's start
    The Rangers recalled Leiter from Triple-A Round Rock ahead of his scheduled start in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Athletics in Oakland.

    Advice: Texas is designating Leiter as the 27th man for the twin bill, but he won't necessarily be heading back to Round Rock after making his second start of the season for the big club Wednesday. The Rangers surprisingly placed Dane Dunning (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, meaning the team should have an opening in the rotation for a fifth starter heading into next week. Leiter was torched for seven runs in 3.2 innings in his MLB debut April 18 in Detroit, but he gets a favorable draw for his second start in a pitcher-friendly venue against a weak Oakland lineup.   • Goes on IL with rotator cuff strain
    The Rangers placed Dunning (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list with a right rotator cuff strain.

    Advice: The roster move is retroactive to Sunday, one day after Dunning made his seventh start of the season while taking a no-decision against the Royals. The Rangers haven't indicated that Dunning sustained the injury at any point during that outing, but the right-hander's shoulder was evidently bothersome coming out of that start. Dunning is without a precise target date to return from the IL, though manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that the 29-year-old isn't expected to have an especially lengthy stay on the shelf. While Dunning joins Nathan Eovaldi (groin), Max Scherzer (back), Cory Bradford (ribs), Jacob deGrom (elbow) and Tyler Mahle (elbow) on the shelf, the Rangers should have back-end rotation spots available for both Jose Urena and Jack Leiter.     Reds transferred LHP Brandon Williamson to the 60-day injured list with a left shoulder strain.

    Waldichuk (elbow) will visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Waldichuk recently had a setback while throwing a live batting practice session. He was diagnosed last October with a UCL sprain and flexor strain but chose a more conservative Tenex procedure to remove scar tissue and help alleviate pain. More will be known after Monday's exam, but his upcoming meeting with Dr. ElAttrache would seem to suggest that Waldichuk's treatment plan hasn't panned out as anticipated.     The Reds transferred Williamson (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.

    Advice: The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for first baseman/designated hitter Mike Ford, who signed a one-year deal with the Reds. Williamson will begin a rehab assignment Thursday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League as he works his way back from a left shoulder strain, but he'll need some time to get ramped back up.     Rangers general manager Chris Young said Wednesday that Scherzer (back) will remain shut down from throwing for the next few days due to a right thumb and forearm issue, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

    Advice: Scherzer has been on the 15-day injured list all season while completing his recovery from Dec. 15 surgery to address a herniated disc in his back, but it's his pitching arm that has presented complications for him coming out of his first rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock back on April 24. Young said that Scherzer won't resume ramping up again until the tightness and discomfort in his arm completely subsides, so the veteran right-hander still looks to be multiple weeks away from being ready to return from the IL.     Advice: Garrett isn't expected to make his season debut for the big club until Sunday versus Philadelphia, but he'll rejoin the Marlins a few days early after fellow starter Edward Cabrera (shoulder) was placed on the IL in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old southpaw opened the season on the shelf due to a left shoulder impingement and made two rehab starts before a brief shutdown period while he contended with a dead-arm phase. Garrett has bounced back well since resuming his rehab assignment April 26, compiling a 1.32 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB in 13.2 innings across three outings between Triple-A Jacksonville and the Marlins' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate.
