    • Worst start of season versus Angels
Valdez (3-2) allowed eight runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings to take the loss Monday versus the Angels.

Advice: Valdez followed up his start of seven shutout innings versus the Athletics with a dud Monday. He was doing fine until the Angels rallied for seven runs in the fifth, including three-run home runs by Nolan Schanuel and Logan O'Hoppe and a solo shot from Jo Adell. Valdez is now at a 4.32 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 34:12 K:BB through 41.2 innings over seven starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road in Seattle. • Framber Valdez gives up three fifth-inning homers
Framber Valdez was pounded for eight runs and three homers in five innings by the Angels in Monday’s loss.

Advice: Valdez allowed just one run on four groundball singles through four innings tonight, but the fifth was a vastly different story. All three homers came in that inning, and it was really pretty amazing that he got to finish the frame while allowing seven runs. Valdez had a 2.88 ERA going into the fifth tonight, only to finish the game at 4.32. It’s the first time in his career that he’s allowed three homers and the second time that he’s allowed eight runs, with the other instance also coming against the Angels in 2020. • Facing hitters Tuesday
Cole (elbow) will face hitters Tuesday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.

Advice: Cole has been throwing off a mound for a couple weeks and is now ready to face hitters for the first time since he was diagnosed with nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow back in mid-March. A rehab assignment shouldn't be too far down the road, although there's been no date revealed for that yet. Cole is still several weeks away from his season debut. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:58 pm

    • Cole will face hitters for the first time in 2024
Gerrit Cole is scheduled to face live hitters on Tuesday.

Advice: Cole played catch on Monday and felt good, so he will now progress to facing live hitters for the first time in his rehab process. There is still a long way to go for Cole, who will face live hitters a couple of times before beginning a proper rehab assignment. The current timeline, provided he doesn’t experience any setbacks, is for Cole to return sometime in mid to late June. What that means for Luis Gil, Clarke Schmidt and the other Yankees starters who are pitching well is anybody’s guess at this point. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:56 pm

    • Locks down eighth save
Doval struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Rockies.

Advice: Doval extended his scoreless streak to 4.1 innings. He needed 17 pitches (10 strikes) Sunday, but he was able to emerge with his eighth save in as many chances this season. The closer has a 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 24:12 K:BB over 18 innings and has also posted a 2-0 record this season. The Giants haven't generated a ton of save opportunities, but Doval has been strong when called upon. Rotowire.com Sunday, 9:04 pm

    • Road struggles continue
Kirby (4-4) suffered the loss Sunday against the Orioles, allowing five runs on nine hits over six innings. He struck out three.

Advice: Kirby was tagged for a solo homer by Gunnar Henderson to lead off the game and eventually allowed five runs and two homers through three innings before settling down and making it through six frames with no additional damage. It was the first time in seven starts Kirby has allowed more than five hits, while the five earned runs lifted Kirby's ERA to 3.99 over 56.1 innings and 5.19 over 26 innings on the road. Kirby's next start is also slated to take place on the road, though in a much friendlier matchup, as he's tentatively lined up to take on the Nationals in Washington next weekend. • Doval locks down eighth save in win over Rockies
Camilo Doval threw a scoreless ninth inning to close out a 4-1 win over the Rockies on Sunday.

Advice: Camilo Doval didn’t allow a hit or a walk while striking out one to earn his eighth save of the season. The right-hander has a 3.00 ERA on the season with 24 strikeouts in 18 innings. He has yet to blow a save on the season, and if the Giants lineup can get healthy and start putting up some runs, he could earn some more saves in the months ahead. Rotoworld Sunday, 3:50 pm

    • George Kirby gives up two homers in loss
George Kirby surrendered five runs in six innings Sunday in a loss to the Orioles.

Advice: Kirby seemed pretty unlucky in a couple of his early-season starts that left him with an inflated ERA, but the Orioles knocked him around pretty good today. He allowed two homers among 11 hard-hit balls, and he struck out only three. The loss leaves him 4-4 with a 3.99 ERA, though his ERA is 2.50 over his last six starts. • Hamstring tightened during start
Gallen revealed after Saturday's start against the Tigers that his right hamstring tightened up on him during the fourth inning, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Advice: It's the same hamstring that he had issues with earlier this season, which resulted in an early removal from one start and having another pushed back. Gallen wound up pitching into the seventh inning Saturday, ultimately getting charged with three runs on seven hits while striking out 10 over 6.2 frames. The right-hander said after the outing that his hamstring feels fine and he's unconcerned. Still, given that it's been a recurring problem, it's something to keep in mind.
