    Scott McGough will function as an opener for the Diamondbacks in Sunday’s series finale against the Padres.

    Advice: It sounds like it will be some sort of modified bullpen day for the Diamondbacks, but they may need some reinforcements after Ryne Nelson lasted only 3 1/3 innings in Saturday’s lopsided loss.   • Struggles versus Guardians
    Munoz (1-2) allowed four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three over four-plus innings to take the loss versus the Guardians on Saturday.

    Advice: Munoz made his first big-league appearance in over a month, but he didn't pitch particularly well. He allowed a solo home run to Jose Ramirez in the first inning, and Steven Kwan's two-run blast in the fifth ended Munoz's outing. Through 19.2 innings, the rookie right-hander has a 5.95 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 22:11 K:BB. It's unclear if Munoz will stay in the rotation, but the Marlins have lost Sixto Sanchez (shoulder) and Ryan Weathers (finger) in June, so they will need to dip into their starting depth.     Brown (1-3) took the loss to the Reds on Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three over four innings.

    Advice: Brown gave up multiple home runs in a game for the first time in his young career. Jeimer Candelario took him deep in the first inning and then TJ Friedl got him for the go-ahead homer in the third. The rookie right-hander has now given up eight runs in his last two starts after a stellar showing of seven no-hit innings against the Brewers on May 28.   • Connects for ninth home run
    Candelario went 1-for-4 with a home run in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Cubs.

    Advice: Candelario delivered early in this one with a solo home run off Ben Brown in the first inning. The Reds' third baseman has responded nicely since being moved to the three hole in the lineup with six home runs and nine RBI in his 16 games since the move.     Friedl went 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Cubs.

    Advice: Friedl drove in three of the Reds' four runs on a two-run homer off Ben Brown in the third and an RBI groundout in the fifth. Friedl reached base again on a walk in the eighth and added his fifth stolen base of the season. The 28-year-old has struggled to stay healthy this season, but he's now started in 10 straight games since his latest IL stint.     Sheets went 3-for-4 with a grand slam in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Red Sox.

    Advice: The 28-year-old slugger took Brayan Bello deep in the fifth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie and giving Sheets the first grand slam of his career. He's gone yard in back-to-back games and has four of his seven homers this season in the last 11 contests, a stretch in which Sheets is batting .282 (11-for-39) with 10 RBI.   • Falls short of first win
    Nastrini came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Red Sox, allowing one run on two hits and five walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out five.

    Advice: He got lifted after 87 pitches (42 strikes) following a Bobby Dalbec homer in the top of the fifth inning that gave Boston a 1-0 lead, preventing Nastrini from recording his first big-league win when Chicago erupted for five runs in the bottom of the frame. Control remains a significant issue for the rookie right-hander, and he's walked at least four batters in three of four starts since his late-May promotion. The rebuilding White Sox seem inclined to live with his growing pains, so Nastrini will carry an 8.39 ERA, 1.99 WHIP and 19:25 K:BB through 24.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next week in Seattle.     Abbott (5-5) earned the win over the Cubs on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and four walks while striking out five over five innings.

    Advice: Abbott struggled a bit with his command in this one as he tied a season high with four walks, but he still managed to get through five innings to get the win. Abbott has now won four of his last six starts and has allowed two runs or fewer in 10 of his 13 starts thus far. The 25-year-old lefty has been a key cog in the Reds' rotation this year, and he will take a 3.28 ERA into his start against the first-place Brewers next week. Rotowire.com Today, 6:15 pm
     
  • Swats first homer of 2024
    Dalbec went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the White Sox.

    Advice: Getting the start in right field and batting seventh, the 28-year-old took Nick Nastrini deep in the fifth inning for Boston's only offense, and Dalbec's first long ball in the majors this season. He's flashed plenty of power in the minors -- in his last 140 games for Triple-A Worcester, he's slugged 41 homers -- but that hasn't yet translated to the game's highest level with any consistency. He'll lose playing time, and likely his spot on the 26-man roster, when players like Tyler O'Neill (knee), Wilyer Abreu (ankle) and Masataka Yoshida (thumb) are back in action, as Dalbec's .159/.243/.238 slash line in 28 games for the Red Sox makes a poor case to keep him around.
