• Garrett Whitlock (oblique) facing hitters Friday
Garrett Whitlock (oblique) will face hitters on Friday in a live batting practice session.

Advice: Whitlock is expected to progress to a minor league rehab assignment next week, which puts him on track to rejoin Boston’s starting rotation mix at some point in mid-to-late May. Rotoworld 18 minutes ago

  • Set to face hitters
Whitlock (oblique) will throw live batting practice Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Assuming all goes well during his live BP session, Whitlock will move onto a rehab assignment next week, though it's unclear if he will require more than one start in the minors. The 27-year-old right-hander has been on the injured list since April 17 and just began his throwing program Saturday. Rotowire.com 20 minutes ago

  • José Urquidy (forearm) faces hitters on Tuesday
José Urquidy (forearm) faced hitters on Tuesday in a live batting practice session.

Advice: A minor league rehab assignment seems to be on the near horizon for Urquidy, who has been on the shelf since spring training recovering from right forearm inflammation. The 29-year-old righty figures to need at least a couple rehab starts before returning to Houston’s starting rotation. Rotoworld 24 minutes ago

  • Espada: Cristian Javier to return this weekend
Cristian Javier (neck) will return this weekend to start against the Tigers.

Advice: Astros manager Joe Espada confirmed what was being widely speculated that Javier would return to Houston’s injury-plagued starting rotation mix after making a minor league rehab start on Saturday for Double-A Corpus Christi. The 27-year-old righty might need some time to knock off the rust, but there likely won’t be any workload restrictions after throwing 68 pitches in his lone rehab outing. • Spencer Turnbull to pitch in relief on Tuesday night
Spencer Turnbull will pitch in relief during Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Turnbull is expected to piggyback with southpaw Cristopher Sánchez on Tuesday night when the Phillies take on the Blue Jays at Citizens Bank Park. The 31-year-old right-hander has been brilliant this season in his Philadelphia debut before Taijuan Walker’s return last week bumped him back to the bullpen. He figures to gobble up a couple frames in this contest, which will be his first appearance since last Tuesday when he allowed two runs over 5 1/3 frames against the Angels. Rotoworld 38 minutes ago
  • Another bullpen session
Cole completed a bullpen session Tuesday and is expected to throw another bullpen this weekend, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.

Advice: Cole is continuing to progress toward returning after throwing off a mound May 4 for the first time since being placed on the injured list in March. He tossed another bullpen session Tuesday without a setback and is expected to continue to ramp up his throwing efforts in the coming weeks. Cole appears to be on track for a mid-June return. • Grayson Rodriguez unlikely to require rehab start
Grayson Rodriguez (shoulder) continued playing catch on Tuesday.

Advice: Rodriguez expressed optimism to reporters that he could return to Baltimore’s starting rotation following a minimum stay on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. It certainly doesn’t sound like there are any long-term concerns with the 24-year-old burgeoning ace. He should be able to jump right back into the Orioles’ stacked rotation mix by mid-May without a minor league rehab assignment. Rotoworld Today, 1:26 pm
  • Could return once eligible
Rodriguez (shoulder) "feels much better" and hopes to be reinstated once he becomes eligible May 15, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reported Tuesday.

Advice: Rodriguez has battled inflammation in his shoulder throughout May. However, per Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com, his move to the 15-day IL was to prevent the issue from growing into anything larger, and he could return to the O's without a rehab start. Rodriguez has a 4-1 record with a 3.71 ERA through six starts and would likely replace Cole Irvin in the rotation once available. Rotowire.com Today, 1:07 pm
  • Will follow Sanchez in relief
Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that Turnbull will pitch in relief Tuesday against the Blue Jays, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Thomson wouldn't reveal exactly how Turnbull will be used, but Gelb says the right-hander will likely pitch three innings or so in what could be a piggyback situation with starter Cristopher Sanchez. Turnbull was demoted to the Phillies recently in spite of a 1.67 ERA and 36:10 K:BB in 32.1 innings this season, as the team has an eye on his workload since he hasn't thrown more than 56.2 innings in a season since 2019.
