• Aiming for Saturday return
Arenado (elbow) said after Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Marlins that he expects to return to the lineup Saturday versus the Giants in St. Louis, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Arenado was lifted for a pinch runner in the top of the eighth inning after he took a 94 mile-per-hour sinker to his right elbow in his fourth plate appearance of the afternoon. Before departing, Arenado went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Though Arenado has been diagnosed with a bruised right elbow after initial X-rays returned negative, he noted that the pitch hit him in a nerve in the elbow that caused his hand to cramp up. Based on his postgame comments, Arenado already seems to be ruling himself out for Thursday's series opener with the Giants at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala., but he's counting on being ready to go coming out of Friday's off day. Toro isn't in the Athletics' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals.

Advice: Although Toro has slashed .309/.338/.456 against left-handed pitchers this season, the Athletics will give Tyler Nevin another start at third base versus southpaw Cole Ragans. Rotowire.com Today, 2:48 pm

Cabbage isn't in the Astros' lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Advice: The lefty-hitting Cabbage will take a seat Wednesday as the lefty-throwing Garrett Crochet starts on the mound for the White Sox. Cooper Hummel, Jake Meyers and Chas McCormick will make up Houston's outfield while Cabbage rests. Rotowire.com Today, 2:20 pm

Singleton isn't in the Astros' lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Advice: Left-hander Garrett Crochet will start on the hill for Chicago, so the lefty-hitting Singleton will retreat to the bench. Mauricio Dubon will slide over to first base instead, opening up left field for Cooper Hummel. Rotowire.com Today, 2:17 pm

  • Getting breather Wednesday
Rojas isn't in the Dodgers' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

  • Goes yard twice in loss
Harper went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Padres.

Advice: The 31-year-old slugger supplied all the Phillies' offense on the afternoon, taking Matt Waldron deep in the third inning before pulling a Jeremiah Estrada splitter down the right-field line in the eighth. Harper has caught fire in June, hitting safely in 10 of the last 11 games while batting .372 (16-for-43). The surge has boosted his slash line on the season to .285/.391/.539 with 17 homers, four steals, 45 runs and 48 RBI in 69 contests. Rotowire.com Today, 2:07 pm

  • Belts eighth homer
Merrill went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Phillies.

Advice: The rookie center fielder accounted for the Padres' only run off Ranger Suarez, driving a two-seam fastball from the southpaw over the right-field wall in the second inning. Merrill has eight homers on the year, but five of them have come in the last seven games, boosting his slash line on the season to .279/.317/.417 with nine steals, 30 RBI and 32 runs in 74 contests. • Nolan Arenado (elbow) hopes to return on Saturday
Nolan Arenado (elbow) is hopeful that he’ll be able to return to action on Saturday.

Advice: That means that he won’t play on Thursday for sure, while Saturday is still up in the air depending on how the next couple of days go. Arenado was clipped by a pitch on Wednesday that hit a nerve in his elbow, which caused his hand to cramp up. When he’s able to return will depend on when he regains full feeling in that hand.
