    • Spencer Howard starting Saturday vs. Rangers
Spencer Howard will start on Saturday against the Rangers.

Advice: Howard takes the ball on Saturday afternoon against the defending World Series champions after operating in a bulk relief role in his last two outings. He’s looked sharp, striking out seven and allowing only two runs over 8 2/3 innings (two appearances) since May 28. Keaton Winn (forearm) is expected to be activated from the injured list to start Sunday’s series finale against the Rangers. Rotoworld 10 minutes ago
    • Getting start in bullpen day
Mlodzinksi will start Saturday's game against the Twins in what's expected to be a bullpen day for the Pirates, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Advice: Mlodzinski will be picking up his second big-league start and his first of the 2024 season while the Pirates look to fill the spot in the rotation that was previously occupied by Quinn Priester (lat), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Over his 20 appearances this season between the Pirates and Triple-A Indianapolis, Mlodzinski hasn't covered more than two innings on any occasions, so manager Derek Shelton is unlikely to ask the right-hander to work more than once through the batting order. Luis Ortiz covered a season-high three innings in his most recent appearance out of the bullpen June 1 in Toronto and could be called upon to serve as a bulk reliever once Mlodzinski exits the game. • Ineffective effort Friday
Brieske allowed two runs on three hits across two innings of relief in Friday's 10-0 loss to the Brewers. He walked two and struck out two.

Advice: The game was already essentially over after Detroit starter Reese Olson allowed eight runs over four innings, but Brieske didn't help matters. Even after the rough appearance, the righty still has a solid 2.70 ERA, and he's only been scored upon twice in seven appearances this season. Brieske should stick in a long relief role for the Tigers, giving him limited fantasy appeal at the moment despite his good play. Rotowire.com 26 minutes ago

    • Expected to resume mound work
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Friday that Perez (groin) will likely resume throwing off the slope of a mound this weekend, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Perez was placed on the 15-day injured list May 28 with a left groin strain, which he sustained while covering first base on a play during his last start May 26. Tomczyk noted that Perez is pain-free in all of his rehab activities and has been throwing off flat ground without restrictions, so the southpaw looks like he'll soon be able to move on to the next phase of his rehab by throwing a bullpen session. Perez is without a defined target date for a return from the IL, but he's likely at least a week away from being activated. Rotowire.com 26 minutes ago

    • Picks up victory Friday
Grove (4-2) pitched a perfect inning to earn the win in relief against the Yankees on Friday.

Advice: Neither team was able to score through nine innings, pushing the contest into extra frames. The Dodgers failed to score in the top of the 10th, but Grove was able to extend the game by keeping the Yankees from scoring in the bottom of that inning. The right-hander then moved into position for the win as a result of Los Angeles scoring twice in the top of the 11th. Grove still has an uninspiring 4.59 ERA on the campaign, but he's been pitching well since the end of April. Over his past 15 outings, he holds a 2.20 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 21:6 K:BB across 16.1 frames while recording four wins and four holds. Rotowire.com Today, 7:00 am

    • Escapes with 13th save
Diaz gave up a run on a hit and a walk in the ninth inning Friday, recording his 13th save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Cubs. He struck out one.

Advice: The right-hander made things difficult once again, issuing a free pass with two outs before a Miguel Amaya double brought the tying run to the plate. Diaz was able to strike out Patrick Wisdom to end the game, however. Diaz has walked a batter in four straight appearances, but he's successfully converted six straight save chances. On the season, he carries a rough 5.55 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 27:18 K:BB through 24.1 innings, but for now the Reds are willing to let him work through his control issues. • Inefficient in no-decision
Poteet came away with a no-decision in Friday's 2-1 extra-innings loss to the Dodgers, allowing two hits and three walks over 4.2 scoreless innings. He struck out one.

Advice: The 29-year-old right-hander kept a dangerous offense off the board, but he needed 84 pitches (50 strikes) to record only 14 outs, and the Yankees' bullpen eventually faltered in the 11th inning. Poteet has a 1.72 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB through 15.2 innings over his three big-league starts this season, but with Gerrit Cole (elbow) set to make his second rehab start Sunday, his time in the New York rotation is running short. Poteet should make at least one more start, which lines up to come on the road next week in Kansas City. Rotowire.com Today, 6:12 am

    • Collects first save
Ramirez recorded his first save of the season in Friday's 2-1 win over the Yankees, giving up one unearned run on one hit in the 11th inning. He struck out two.

Advice: The journeyman right-hander is already on his third team of 2024, but with Evan Phillips having thrown 31 pitches the night before and both Daniel Hudson and Blake Treinen having been deployed earlier in Friday's contest, Ramirez got the call in a high-leverage spot and delivered. He did allow the phantom runner to score on a one-out single by Aaron Judge, but Ramirez then struck out Giancarlo Stanton before Anthony Rizzo popped out to end the game. In nine innings for the Dodgers, the 29-year-old has a solid 3.00 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 5:2 K:BB, but he's highly unlikely to become a regular part of the late-inning mix. Rotowire.com Today, 6:06 am
    • Notches 14th save
Kimbrel worked a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his 14th save of the season in a 6-3 win over the Rays. He didn't walk or strike out a batter.

Advice: The veteran closer let his defense do the work, getting outs on a flyball, a groundball and a popup in foul territory. Kimbrel hasn't been tagged with an earned run in 10 straight appearances, converting all six of his save chances during that stretch with a 10:0 K:BB as he puts his early-season struggles behind him.
