• Resumes throwing
Springs (elbow/lat) threw long toss from 90 feet Thursday, Kristie Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Advice: Springs was removed from his second rehab start in the rookie-level Florida Complex League this past Saturday due to lat soreness, but it's a good sign that he was able to resume throwing five days later. According to Ackert, Springs made about 45 throws Thursday with no apparent issues. It's not clear when the left-hander will be ready to resume a rehab assignment. Springs is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent last April. Rotowire.com Thursday, 7:46 am
  • Jeffrey Springs long tosses on Thursday
Jeffrey Springs (lat) was able to long toss on Thursday, five days after being removed from his rehab start with shoulder tightness.

Advice: Springs made 45 throws from up to 90 feet on Thursday, which is a good sign so closely removed from leaving his start rehab start with an injury. The left-hander should continue to build back up towards getting back on the mound, but the Rays will not rush him. Given that Springs is recovering from Tommy John surgery and has a history as a reliever, it wouldn’t be a surprise for the Rays to bring him back in a multi-inning role or as a “follower” behind an opener. The uncertainty makes him a tough player to stash in shallower formats. Rotoworld Thursday, 7:26 am
  • Shohei Ohtani homers, plates three in blowout win
Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI on Wednesday in the Dodgers’ lopsided win over the Mets.

Advice: Ohtani extended Los Angeles’ early lead with a fifth-inning RBI single before clobbering a two-run homer -- his 14th round-tripper of the season -- off Mets reliever Jorge López in the eighth inning. The 29-year-old two-way superstar holds an astronomical 1.010 OPS in his Dodgers debut so far. That’ll work. Rotoworld Wednesday, 5:28 pm

  • Sitting out nightcap
Ohtani isn't in the Dodgers' lineup for the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.

Advice: The Dodgers were planning on giving Ohtani the evening off heading into Tuesday's twin bill, so he'll sit in the dugout after an 0-for-5 performance during Game 1. Will Smith will instead serve as Los Angeles' designated hitter, allowing Austin Barnes to start behind the plate. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 4:16 pm

  • Ohtani won’t play second game of doubleheader
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Ohtani won’t start the second game of the doubleheader Tuesday against the Mets.

Advice: Ohtani will get a rare day off in the second game of the twin-billing. With the 29-year-old superstar out, the Dodgers will have Will Smith as the designated hitter and Austin Barnes will get the start behind the plate. Rotoworld Tuesday, 11:19 am

  • Tagged with loss Monday
Valdez (3-3) took the loss against Seattle on Monday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four batters over six innings.

Advice: Valdez looked to be in for a rough night after giving up three runs on four hits in the first inning, but he settled in from there and yielded just two hits and no runs the rest of the way. That allowed him to squeak by with a quality start, though he nonetheless ended with his second straight loss. Valdez gave up eight runs over five frames against the Angels in his previous appearance, so this was a decent bounce-back despite the difficult first inning. The left-hander tentatively lines up to face Minnesota at home in his next start. Rotowire.com Monday, 10:39 pm
  • Snaps losing streak Monday
Miller (4-5) earned the win over Houston on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six batters over six innings.

Advice: Miller came into the contest having lost three consecutive outings, during which he posted a 5.71 ERA. The right-hander bounced back with his sixth quality start of the season and his sixth outing with at least six strikeouts. Miller has posted a 3.48 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 62:18 K:BB through 64.2 innings on the campaign. Rotowire.com Monday, 10:28 pm

  • Bryce Miller strong for six to take down Astros
Bryce Miller pitched six innings of two-run ball for the win as the Mariners edged the Astros 3-2 on Monday.

Advice: Seattle got three in the bottom of the first and Houston scored twice in the fifth to account for all of the scoring. Miller was actually perfect through four before giving up four hits in the fifth and one more in the sixth. He struck out six. Miller had lost his last four decisions, including the last three starts in a row. He’s now 4-5 with a 3.48 ERA through 11 turns. Rotoworld Monday, 9:31 pm

  • Framber Valdez turns in quality start in loss
Framber Valdez surrendered three runs in six innings Monday in a no-decision versus the Mariners.

Advice: All of the runs scored in the first, an inning that could have been much worse if Jake Meyers didn’t cover half of the outfield to chase down a Cal Raleigh fly with the bases loaded. Valdez still gave up four hits that inning, but he allowed just two more the rest of the way. Nevertheless, he still took the loss in a 3-2 game, leaving him 3-3 with a 4.34 ERA for the season. A home start against the Twins is up next. Rotoworld Monday, 9:31 pm
