      Carlos Estévez didn’t give up a hit while qualifying for a save against the Tigers on Friday.

      Advice: Estévez didn’t give up a hit, didn’t strike anyone out and didn’t issue a walk. He didn’t really have a chance to do any of those things as the Tigers made him throw only nine pitches; eight of those landing for strikes.       Ryan Helsley worked a flawless ninth for his 29th save Friday against the Reds.

      Advice: Helsley very nearly surrendered a game-tying homer to Stuart Fairchild with two outs in the ninth, but Brendan Donovan made a jumping catch at the wall. Statcast said it would have been a homer in 14 of the 30 parks.       Jackson Merrill hit a three-run homer to camp a nine-run fifth as the Padres bested the Red Sox 9-2 on Friday.

      Advice: The Padres were held scoreless until the fifth, when the first nine batters totaled nine runs on eight hits and one walk against Nick Pivetta and Greg Weissert. Merrill concluded the rally with the second homer of the inning. After that, the Padres put their bats back to bed, coming up with just one hit off Chase Anderson in the final four innings. Merrill’s homer was his 11th in 82 games. His current .282/.318/.439 line is a near match for the .277/.326/.444 he came in at least year, only that was compiled in high-A and Double-A.       Reds’ manager David Bell told reporters on Friday that Jeimer Candelario (knee) is expected to return to the starting lineup on Sunday.

      Advice: Candelario has missed each of the team’s last three games due to a knee issue and he’ll sit on Saturday as well. The team doesn’t want him to miss a full 10 days though and they’re very hopeful that he’ll be able to return to action on Sunday.
