    • Yoshinobu Yamamoto (shoulder) begins throwing
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (shoulder) started his throwing progression this week — playing catch twice from a distance up to 60 feet.

Advice: The Dodgers are going to take every possible precaution as they ramp their prized 25-year-old right-hander back up following a rotator cuff strain. There’s no timeline yet for when he may be able to return to the Dodgers’ rotation, but the fact that he’s up and throwing again is at least an encouraging sign. Rotoworld Today, 2:33 pm

    • Starts playing catch
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday that Yamamoto (shoulder) played catch from 60 feet twice this week, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Advice: It's an encouraging step for the Japanese right-hander, who had been shut down from throwing since he landed on the injured list with a rotator cuff strain in mid-June. Yamamoto will need to build his arm strength up a bit before he returns to throwing off a mound. He's likely not particularly close to a return as he'll also need multiple rehab starts in the minors before rejoining the Dodgers. Rotowire.com Today, 2:29 pm

    • Back in action Friday
Alvarez (hip) is batting third as the designated hitter Friday against the Rangers, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The 27-year-old slugger sat out Thursday after he departed Wednesday's contest due to right hip tightness, but he's ready to rejoin the lineup for Friday's series opener versus Texas. Alvarez has gone 2-for-13 with three walks and five strikeouts over his past five games, though that slump was preceded by a six-game stretch in which he went 11-for-22 with four doubles and three homers. • Yordan Alvarez (hip) returns to lineup on Friday
Yordan Alvarez (hip) returned to the Astros’ starting lineup for Friday night’s series opener against the Rangers.

Advice: The 27-year-old slugger was pulled from Wednesday’s game due to tightness in his right hip and sat out Thursday’s ballgame as a precautionary measure. He’s feeling much better on Friday though and will return to the Astros’ lineup as their designated hitter. Alvarez will bat third against Rangers’ left-hander Andrew Heaney on Friday evening in Houston. Rotoworld Today, 1:35 pm

    • Jake Burger missing from Marlins’ lineup on Friday
Jake Burger is not in the Marlins’ starting lineup for Friday night’s soiree against the Reds.

Advice: The 28-year-old slugger had had a rough go overall at the plate this season, hitting just .215/.256/.349 with nine homers, 31 RBI and an 81/16 K/BB ratio over 293 plate appearances. Perhaps a night off to clear his head will do him some good. Emmanuel Rivera will start in his place at the hot corner and will bat sixth against Carson Spiers and the Reds on Friday evening in Cincinnati. Rotoworld Today, 1:26 pm

    • On bench vs. southpaw
Yoshida is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Royals, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Advice: Yoshida has a .923 OPS with five extra-base hits and 12 RBI over his past 14 games, but he'll head to the bench Friday as lefty Cole Ragans pitches for Kansas City. Tyler O'Neill will rest his legs as the designated hitter while Rob Refsnyder picks up a start in the outfield. Rotowire.com Today, 1:02 pm
    • Stays hot Thursday
Nimmo went 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBI in Thursday's win over the Nationals.

Advice: The 31-year-old broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, ripping a bases-loaded double to the wall in left-center field before coming home on a J.D. Martinez knock. Nimmo has a six-game hitting streak going, batting .360 (9-for-25) during that stretch with two doubles, three homers, five runs and 10 RBI, and his 62 RBI on the season leave him just seven away from establishing a new career high. • Racks up three hits, four RBI
Yoshida went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and two additional RBI in Thursday's 7-0 win against Oakland.

Advice: Yoshida put Boston on the board in the first inning with a two-run single and capped the team's scoring with a two-run homer in the sixth. He finished with his fourth multi-hit effort through nine games in July. Yoshida is batting .333 (12-for-36) over that stretch with two long balls, 11 RBI and five runs. • Yordan Alvarez out Thursday with hip ailment
Yordan Alvarez (hip) is absent from the lineup for Thursday’s showdown against the Marlins.

Advice: No real surprise here as the Astros aren’t going to take any chances with their middle-of-the-order lynchpin with the All-Star break in a few days. The 27-year-old fantasy superstar made an early exit from Wednesday’s contest due to right hip tightness. It doesn’t sound like he’ll wind up requiring a trip to the injured list, but he might not play a ton over the next few days. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.
