    • Mets demoting Baty to Triple-A
      Mets optioned 3B Brett Baty to Triple-A Syracuse, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

      Advice: Baty hit .225 with four home runs and 16 RBI in 49 games with the Mets. He was splitting time at third base with Mark Vientos. Vientos is hitting .295 with three home runs in 14 games.       The Mets optioned Baty to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

      Advice: Baty is slashing just .225/.304/.325 this season and has struck out at 34.7 percent clip in May. With the emergence of Mark Vientos (.295/.354/.591), the Mets have elected to send Baty back to the minors in hopes of getting his swing right.       Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that Jung (wrist) "looks great" after resuming hitting, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

      Advice: Jung was cleared to hit Tuesday following a visit with the doctor that performed the surgery on his right wrist in early April. He hit for a second straight day Wednesday while using a lighter bat, with Bochy saying afterward that "you'd think he was going to be ready in a couple of days" based on how he looked. Jung is not going to be ready to return soon, of course, but this is an encouraging progress report. A clearer timetable for the third baseman could be established in the coming days.       Baty is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.

      Advice: Baty was in the lineup for three of the last four games with the Mets facing four right-handed starting pitchers, but he'll give way to the righty-hitting Mark Vientos on Wednesday while southpaw James Paxton takes the hill for the Dodgers. Vientos should continue to regularly replace the lefty-hitting Baty when the Mets face lefties, but the distribution of starts at third base between the two against right-handed pitching still looks to be up in the air. Baty has helped his cause by getting on base five times in 12 plate appearances over his last three starts, but Vientos owns a 1.085 OPS since his May 15 call-up from Triple-A Syracuse to keep himself in the mix for starts against righties.       Yandy Diaz is hitting second and playing first base versus the Athletics on Tuesday.

      Advice: Diaz has 231 plate appearances thus far in 2024, and 223 of those have come in the leadoff spot. He’s hit just .254 with a .686 from that spot, however, so Tampa Bay will move the 32-year-old down a spot in the lineup.     • Lands on IL with hamstring strain
      The Mariners placed Polanco on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a right hamstring strain.

      Advice: Polanco was replaced by Josh Rojas in the sixth inning of Sunday's 9-5 win over the Nationals, with the former going 1-for-2 with an RBI before exiting. Polanco missed seven games earlier in May due to a right hamstring issue, and the 30-year-old will spend time on the injured list this time around. General manager Justin Hollander said Monday that while Polanco has not yet undergone an MRI, he is not expected to be sidelined long, per Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM. The Mariners selected Ryan Bliss from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move, and he will start at second base Monday and bat eighth against Astros southpaw Framber Valdez.       Mariners placed INF Jorge Polanco on the 10-day injured list with a strained right hamstring.

      Advice: Polanco aggravated the hamstring Sunday in his fifth appearance back after an eight-day absence due to the same injury. He’s hitting just .195/.293/.302 this season, so the break might be best for everyone. The Mariners will use Dylan Moore and Ryan Bliss at second base for now.       Jorge Polanco will undergo an MRI exam on his injured left hamstring on Monday.

      Advice: Mariners’ manager Scott Servais told reporters after Sunday’s game that the club will have a better idea on his availability after that exam. The Mariners would probably be best served putting him on the injured list this time around and giving him the proper time to heal, but that’s not the path that they took while allowing him to sit out most of last week on a day-to-day basis.
